Grifte lies at the confluence of the Eder and Fulda; the Eder Cycle Route passes through the town. Here, the route recommends a break before continuing about two kilometres farther to Baunatal-Guntershausen and the Fulda Cycle Route/R1. This section thus connects the river confluence with a specific direction for continuing your ride. When planning your cycling days, this gives you a clear landmark for your tour through Grifte.

Cycle routes and route characteristics

The Eder Cycle Route reaches Grifte via quiet farm tracks and sections of a paved former railway line. Overall, the route is characterised by natural surfaces and asphalt, as well as gentle climbs. It is considered generally suitable for cyclists. These details convey the character of the route without suggesting that every section has the same surface or gradients.

A 2.3-kilometre section of the Eder Cycle Route between Wolfershausen and Grifte was officially opened on 22 July 2023. There is a rest area for cyclists along the route. In addition to the recommendation to take a break at the confluence, there is also specific information about a stage and a rest area. Before setting off, check the current route and the condition of the infrastructure on site.

The “Stadt-Land-Fluss” circular route runs from Edermünde to Kassel and back, following the Eder and Fulda. It starts at Edermünde-Grifte railway station and follows the Eder Cycle Route towards Guntershausen. The route passes through typical North Hessian half-timbered villages and by farm shops and small, cosy inns. A stop at the river confluence is therefore different from the circular route, which runs from Edermünde to Kassel and back.

In Besse, the “Centre of Germany” stele stands in an idyllic meadow on the edge of the Langenberge hills. From there, you can see across the Chattengau as far as the Söhre. A basalt stele about three metres high marks the spot and is easy to see from a small rest area with a bench and information board. You can reach the stele via the Habichtswald Nature Park car park on Röder Weg in Besse.

In Haldorf, the Hirtenhaus houses a local history museum with a permanent exhibition of objects from village life. The building was constructed in 1726; the last shepherd lived there until his death in 1948. Another historic site is the Haldorf horse grave, which lies above Wolfershausen in the woodland of the Haldorf district. The weathered inscription reads, “Here lie Bella and Rosa, 13 February 1868.” The grave can be reached from Haldorf via the Ederhöhenweg trail towards Wolfershausen, near Amselhof.

Holzhausen, in the wider Edermünde destination, has an outdoor swimming pool with a solar-heated pool. If you plan to visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
