Asterode: Church and Local History
Accommodation in Asterode
The church and historical name forms give Asterode a clear focus on local history. When planning your stay with cultural interests in mind, you can distinguish this local connection from the other themes of the wider destination of Neukirchen. There, separate themes of remembrance, museums and fairy tales are also featured; they are not part of the history of Asterode’s church.
Church and Local History
The former church collapsed in 1845. Today’s Asterode church was rebuilt at a new location in 1850; construction took place in 1850 and 1851. This means the history of the previous building and the creation of today’s church differ both in location and in their chronological milestones. In 1882, the church received its organ as a gift from local resident Christine Schreiber, née Muth. The donation of the organ marks a later stage in the history of the church building.
Asterode has been documented since 1240 under the name “Alsterode”; later forms include “Astinerode” and “Asterode.” This brings together two historical perspectives: the name forms tell the story of how the place name was recorded, while the church dates relate individual stages of construction and donations. The contrast in timing distinguishes the two perspectives: the oldest name form mentioned dates back to 1240, while the church events described took place in the 19th century.
Culture in the Wider Destination of Neukirchen
One distinct focus on remembrance in Neukirchen is the placement of Stolpersteine (stumbling stones). Since 2014, they have been laid each year in memory of Jewish families from the town who were stripped of their rights, expelled or murdered during the Nazi era. This subject differs from Asterode’s church and name history: it focuses on the persecution of the families concerned.
The Märchenhaus (Fairy-Tale House) stands in Neukirchen’s historic market square. A thick blonde Rapunzel braid hangs from the upper floor of a small half-timbered house. The Märchenhaus features vividly staged fairy-tale scenes and treasures, some of which are more than 150 years old. Visitors can listen to a storyteller or reader by arrangement. Check current availability if you plan to include this experience.
The local history museum offers a different focus. Its two neighboring buildings are located behind St. Nicholas Church on the market square; the museum displays workshops representing more than ten trades. During the summer months, certified health consultants Silke and Holger Arndt offer introductory Kneipp courses. As this is a seasonal offering, check whether it is currently running before making plans. The offerings differ in their timing: a fairy-tale storytelling session or reading is available by arrangement, while the introductory Kneipp courses are offered during the summer months; one depends on an arrangement, the other on the season.
Another feature of the wider destination of Neukirchen is the Badewelt indoor swimming pool: the water temperature is 28 °C in both the swimming pool and the children’s wading pool.
