Born: Half-Timbered Architecture, the Limes and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Born
Born between half-timbered architecture and Limes history
Born is known for a distinctive half-timbered church, traces of the Limes, and opportunities for hiking and cycling. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: you can get to know the village through its architectural and archaeological history, or plan a route on foot or by bike.
The Baroque church in Born is the only Protestant half-timbered church in western Hesse. This description brings together three specific features: its Baroque character, its Protestant denomination, and its half-timbered construction. The church is therefore a distinct cultural landmark in Born.
Traces of the Limes can also be found in the Born area. At the site of Limes watchtower Wp 3/4*, two ditches once surrounded the mound of a wooden watchtower. In the cleared area, or in the newly reforested area, the site is now identifiable only by excavation pits; the actual tower mound is difficult to make out. Visitors interested in archaeology should therefore not mistake the visible traces for a clearly recognisable tower structure.
Hiking options and the Aar Valley Cycle Route
The Borner Runde is a hiking route; the recommended starting point is the sports ground in Hohenstein-Born. Another option is the 5.5-kilometre Hohenstein Limes circular route, marked with seven information panels. Check the route details before setting off or starting out on site.
For cyclists, the new route of the Aar Valley Cycle Route runs from Michelbach via the “Sonnenweg” to Holzhausen über Aar and Breithardt, then on to Born and Adolfseck, where it rejoins the original route. An update published on 9 August 2023 describes this route; check the current alignment before setting off. The Aar Valley Cycle Route follows the Aar from its source to its mouth and is considered safe, close to nature, varied and family-friendly. At the same time, some sections are somewhat challenging. Take these differing route characteristics into account when planning rather than assuming the entire route is uniform.
More options in the wider destination of Hohenstein
The wider destination of Hohenstein offers further, independent places to visit. Hohenstein Castle is the area’s most historically significant site and the municipality’s landmark. Performances by the Taunusbühne take place every year in June and July on the open-air stage in the castle courtyard; some seats are covered. The programme varies from year to year, so it is worth checking the dates for your planned visit.
The educational centre for the World Heritage Site of the Limes is also located at Hofgut Georgenthal in Hohenstein. Another Limes walk in the area is the 5-kilometre Georgenthal Limes circular route, which has nine information panels and starts at the car park at Hofgut Georgenthal. Compared with the 5.5-kilometre Hohenstein Limes circular route, the Georgenthal route is half a kilometre shorter and has two more panels.
For an active outing, Hohenstein also offers the family yoga trail in Burg-Hohenstein. The short loop is 1.3 kilometres long and the long loop is 2.4 kilometres. Children and adults can try yoga exercises at 14 stations; the starting point is the information board at the community hall.
