Limburg a.d.Lahn offers different ways to shape your stay: the historic Old Town on the Lahn, striking buildings, art and trails within the city. The Old Town stretches along the riverbank across a difference in elevation of more than 70 metres and is home to numerous historic buildings and places of interest. Its narrow lanes are lined with lovingly restored half-timbered houses and 19th-century villas, many of which house shops, restaurants and cafés. This brings historic architecture together with places at the heart of everyday city life. You can plan your stay around these different sides of Limburg rather than focusing on just one landmark.

The Cathedral and Old Lahn Bridge

Limburg Cathedral is the city’s landmark and a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. The cathedral rises high above Limburg, its façade framed by twin towers; elaborate decoration also shapes the impression of its interior. The Old Lahn Bridge offers a different accent: this historic structure dates from the 14th century and connects the Old Town with the opposite bank of the Lahn. The cathedral and bridge thus represent two distinctive sides of the city’s history—Romanesque architecture on one hand and a historic crossing over the river on the other. The Old Town’s location on the banks of the Lahn also makes the river an important point of reference when exploring the cityscape.

Art and Exhibition History

Limburg also offers a distinct focus for art lovers. The city’s art collections comprise around 5,000 objects by more than 40 artists. A selection of the works has been shown regularly over the past four decades, complemented by presentations featuring works by contemporary and regional artists. The municipal exhibition venue for the art collections opened on 20 September 1985 with the presentation “Engert and the Theatre.” The size of the collection and its exhibition history offer a perspective on Limburg that differs from its medieval architecture: here, the focus is on artworks and changing presentations. Since individual exhibitions change, it is worth checking the current programme for your planned visit.

Cathedral Plateau, Way of the Cross and Medicinal Herb Garden

In 2019, the Cathedral Plateau was landscaped as a park-like space on the site of a former cemetery, inviting visitors to linger. Work on the landscaping around the Cathedral Plateau and castle garden is continuing. The Way of the Cross offers a different kind of route: it leads up from the Valley of Josaphat to the Chapel of the Cross on Greifenberg, passing more than 14 stations. These places therefore serve different purposes: the Cathedral Plateau is designed as a park-like place to spend time, while the Way of the Cross is a route with stations and named endpoints.

Limburg’s medicinal herb garden has been in existence since 2003 and contains around 150 medicinal and culinary plants. Visitors are encouraged to touch the plants, so the garden is not intended solely for viewing. Guided tours are offered for interested residents and groups; dates may vary. If a guided tour is important to your plans, check the current options in advance.

Weekly Market and Cycling Route

The Limburg weekly market on Neumarkt in the city centre is part of everyday city life. It adds a market visit to the historic and cultural attractions; individual market offerings and arrangements may change. Check the latest details in advance if you plan to include the market as a regular part of your stay.

The Lahn Cycle Route also passes directly through Limburg. It follows the course of the Lahn and runs through historic towns and villages. This offers another way to explore the region for travellers who want to experience Limburg by bike. While the cathedral, bridge and Old Town bring the city’s architectural history and streetscape to the fore, the cycling route connects your stay with the river and the places along its course. These different highlights can help you choose what to explore in Limburg based on what matters to you on your trip.
