Discover Reinheim
Accommodation in Reinheim
If you are planning a stay in Reinheim, you can choose from nature, local history and culture. Reinheimer Teich, the local history museum, the railway signal box museum and the Hofgut cultural centre each offer a different focus. Your interests may play a role when choosing a hotel in Reinheim: would you like to combine your stay more with nature watching, railway history or cultural events?
Reinheimer Teich Nature Reserve and nature topics
Reinheimer Teich Nature Reserve covers around 75 hectares. The circular trail, about three kilometres long, has eight information boards about history, botany, wildlife, birds and life in the water. The topics combine nature and historical aspects, so you can focus on different things during a walk. 101 bird species have been recorded at Reinheimer Teich, including 64 breeding species.
Nature education is also offered at the Reinheimer Teich nature conservation barn and its nature experience grounds. Small paths around the barn introduce the region’s various habitats. The barn hosts exhibitions, talks and workshops. The nature conservation barn can be reached by bicycle via the Reinheim–Groß-Zimmern cycle path or the Reinheim–Habitzheim cycle path.
The barn is also the starting point for themed walks exploring the surrounding area. Topics range from European pond turtles, tree frogs and beavers to birds and plants. While the small paths on the grounds introduce the region’s habitats, these walks focus on the wider surroundings.
Museums, technology and culture at the Hofgut
The Reinheim local history museum presents the past century across 14 rooms. These include historic workplaces belonging to a blacksmith, pharmacist, washerwoman, button maker and weaver. In addition to the broad historical scope, the museum focuses on five specific occupations.
The Reinheim railway signal box museum was built in 1896; its technology is still almost entirely intact and operational. On regular opening days, you can join guided tours about railway history and how the historic signal box technology works. The tours therefore offer both a historical and a technical focus.
The Hofgut Reinheim cultural centre is housed in a historic building dating from the 14th century. It includes gallery rooms belonging to the Reinheim Cultural Association and an event hall. The Hofgut is often a venue for cultural events, including Reinheim Satire Week, which takes place every summer.
Darmstadt-Dieburg as a regional guide
The wider travel destination of Darmstadt-Dieburg includes the Hessian Rhine Plain, the Lower Main Plain, the Messel Hills, the Reinheim Hills, the Vorderer Odenwald and the Sandstone Odenwald. These six landscapes show the variety of the destination. Darmstadt-Dieburg also has an extensive network of well-signposted routes for hiking, walking and Nordic walking.
The region’s geological history is another point of interest: the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Messel Pit is a fossil site with a rich variety of uniquely preserved fossils, documenting the history of the Earth 47 million years ago. The visitor centre explains the history and significance of Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
