Zichow brings together architectural history and woodland scenery. The church, castle and mill each offer a distinct cultural perspective, while Zichow Forest adds its own natural landscape. For your stay, you can first decide whether you are more interested in church architecture and historic furnishings, the castle ensemble, milling technology or the forest.

Zichow Church: Architecture and Historic Furnishings

Zichow Church dates from the 13th century. Its rectangular tower is as wide as the nave, which is joined by a recessed rectangular choir. Inside the church is a wooden crucifix from the 16th century, while two bells date from the 14th and 15th centuries. The architecture and furnishings thus bring together different historical periods.

Zichow Castle and the Old Castle Complex

Zichow Castle was built in the Baroque style in 1745. The Fangerturm, dating from the 13th century, is part of the visible remains of the old castle complex. The Baroque castle building and a much older part of the castle complex thus represent different building phases in Zichow.

With its newly laid-out park, the castle is at the heart of the town’s cultural life each year. At the same time, the castle itself is awaiting a new use. The castle’s history and park are part of the local cultural scene, but the castle’s status should be considered separately.

Zichow Mill: Technology and Panoramic Views

The mill combines well-preserved technology with views across Zichow. During a visit, you can see the milling equipment; from the upper floor, you can enjoy panoramic views of the town. Sights in view include the castle and park. Far-reaching views extend to the Randow Valley, Schwedt, Poland, and Gramzow and the surrounding area. Check in advance when visits are possible.

Traditionally, the mill opens for the nationwide Mill Day. If you are planning a visit then, check the current dates in advance.

Zichow Forest and the FFH Area

The Zichower Wald – Weinberg FFH area (DE 2750-304) is in the Uckermark district, northeast of Berlin, in the municipalities of Zichow and Gramzow. The management plan dated 24 February 2020 gives its area as approximately 129.1 hectares. It describes Zichow Forest, alongside Zehnebecker Forest to the north, as the only larger forest area in the surrounding landscape, which is dominated by arable farming. The forest consists of European beech, oak-hornbeam and alluvial forests.

More Places to Explore in the Uckermark

Beyond Zichow, the wider destination of the Uckermark offers its own nature and culture. Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park lies amid the Uckermark’s many lakes and gently rolling landscape, and includes numerous clear-water lakes, kettle holes and wetlands. The nature park is said to have more than 150 kilometers of water trails and over 600 kilometers of signposted hiking trails.

The Gramzow Railway Museum offers another cultural perspective on the Uckermark. It presents historic railway vehicles from different periods, along with exhibitions on track construction, workshop operations, and operating and transport services. On operating days, the museum railway offers rides on historic railway vehicles and the chance to drive a railbike yourself.
