Discover Seehausen
Accommodation in Seehausen
Seehausen is a ribbon village situated directly beside a lanke on the northern shore of the Oberuckersee. To help choose a travel destination, consider these distinct interests: Seehausen village church, the history of the Marienwerder monastery peninsula south of the village, and the “Lake Tour around the Uckermark Lakes” cycle route, which passes through Seehausen. There is also a guided pony-riding option for children aged three and over, available only by prior telephone arrangement. If you are looking for a hotel in Seehausen, you can consider in advance whether cultural history, cycling, or this specific activity for children is the best fit for your travel plans.
Half-Timbered Church and Altarpiece
Seehausen village church was completed in 1753 and is a rare half-timbered church in the Uckermark region. Its three-part altarpiece is richly decorated with Renaissance ornamentation and dated to between 1560 and 1580. The completion of the church and the dating of the altarpiece are therefore clearly separate: the altarpiece dates from earlier than the completion of the church building. Both its half-timbered construction and the separate dating of its furnishings are therefore of interest when considering the church.
Marienwerder and the Monastery’s History
The former Cistercian nunnery of Marienwerder was located on the monastery peninsula south of Seehausen. Archaeological finds from the site, including the largest assemblage of pilgrim badges found together, can be viewed at the Dominican Monastery Cultural History Museum in Prenzlau. Two locations should be distinguished when planning your visit: the former monastery site was on the peninsula, while the finds are on display at the museum in Prenzlau. The Burgwallinsel is also part of Marienwerder’s history: the peninsula and the island in the Oberuckersee were once connected by a covered wooden bridge.
Cycle Routes and Historical Orientation
The “Lake Tour around the Uckermark Lakes” cycle route passes through Seehausen and is marked with a route sign showing blue waves on a white background. Make sure to note the full route name: in the wider Oberuckersee destination area, the “Oberuckersee Lake Tour” also passes through Potzlow, among other places. One of the sights there is the wooden Roland statue. An information board on the road in Seehausen, near the station, explains the history of the Angermünde–Stralsund railway. It is one of the oldest railway lines in Brandenburg and Pomerania. The signposted cycle route and the historical information about the railway therefore relate to different aspects of travel planning. If you are considering travelling by train from Berlin or Stralsund, check the current timetable for your intended travel date before basing your plans on that connection.
Pony Rides by Prior Telephone Arrangement
Guided pony rides for children aged three and over are offered at the Seehausen Pony Farm. They are available only by prior telephone arrangement. If you would like to include a ride in your itinerary, please arrange it by phone.
