Kemnitz: Village Church, Farmsteads and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Kemnitz
Kemnitz combines village architecture and settlement history with hiking opportunities starting in the village. The village church and several listed buildings offer insight into architectural history; trails lead through the landscape along the Nieplitz and into an extensive forest. When planning your trip, you can weigh up a focus on local history against longer hikes.
Listed Farmsteads and Village Church
Brandenburg’s official heritage list (as of January 1, 2026) includes several protected buildings in Kemnitz. At Hauptstraße 13, the listed farmstead comprises a residential building and a barn. The Wüstenhagen farmstead at Hauptstraße 14 is an ensemble of a residential building, a gatehouse, a left and a right stable building, and a barn. At number 15 is the listed Richter farmhouse with a gatehouse. These addresses highlight different components of a farmstead: a residential building, gatehouse, stable and barn.
Other addresses also feature a range of building types. The listed residential-stable house at Hauptstraße 22 is a central-hall house with two stable buildings. At Hauptstraße 27, the heritage list names a listed central-hall house and a dovecote. The residential building at Wittbrietzener Straße 1 is also listed. These details make the variety of Kemnitz’s architectural forms a tangible subject for a walk around the village, without presuming that any particular visiting arrangements are available.
Kemnitz Village Church was first built in the mid-14th century as a simple hall church of fieldstone masonry. In 1739, it was extended to the west and given a simple roof turret covered with slate. Its architectural history can thus be traced through two distinct periods and changes: the medieval fieldstone construction and the 18th-century extension.
Spiekerhus and Settlement History
Spiekerhus is one of the village’s sights and a distinctive form of the Mark’s central-hall house. This listed timber-framed ensemble is considered the last remaining example of the Nuthe-Nieplitz house type. The Nuthe-Nieplitz house also has significance across the municipality: it is the oldest farmstead in the municipality of Nuthe-Urstromtal and was built entirely of timber framing. These connections place Kemnitz’s architecture in a broader historical context while keeping the focus on the local buildings.
The village’s settlement history is also part of its character: Kemnitz stands on historic ground, namely a Slavic rampart. At the appropriate time of year, mushroom walks are also held in Kemnitz. They add a seasonal connection to the landscape alongside the architectural and settlement history, without being tied to a fixed event date.
