Bad Wilsnack

Church and pilgrimage history

St. Nikolai’s Wunderblutkirche is considered the landmark of Bad Wilsnack and is recognized as a monument of national importance. Construction of the pilgrimage church began after three supposedly miraculous communion wafers were discovered in 1384. The church houses the Wunderblut shrine; its medieval stained-glass windows are considered the most significant collection of their kind in Brandenburg.

Thermal brine and graduation tower

The Kristall Kur- und Gradier-Therme Bad Wilsnack uses thermal brine at 34–36 °C, rich in iron and iodine, from its own spring at a depth of 1,018 metres. The graduation tower at the thermal spa is 50 metres long, 7.5 metres high and open to the public. The spa has three indoor and five outdoor saunas, including the Mega-Sauna Dom.

Green spaces and landscape

Bad Wilsnack’s green spaces include Schlosspark, Stadtpark and the new Kurpark. The town is located in the Elbe River Landscape Brandenburg Biosphere Reserve; extensive pine forests form a horseshoe-shaped frame around Bad Wilsnack. A few kilometres to the south is Rühstädt, which is considered a European stork village. It has around 40 breeding pairs each year.

In the wider travel destination of Prignitz, the Brandenburg section of the cross-state Elbe River Landscape – Brandenburg Biosphere Reserve covers around 53,000 hectares and lies almost entirely within Prignitz district. This regional scale adds a wider landscape context to the town’s connection with nature.
