Forest and History

Fichtenwalde lies in the heart of the forest and offers space for peace, nature and relaxation. Its forest setting is a starting point; trails, history and local festivals add to the picture of the town. If you are looking for a hotel in Fichtenwalde, you can consider whether you would like to include nature, trails, a festival or regional history in your trip. The first garden cottages in the Fichtenwalde colony were built in 1908.

Hiking and Cycling Trails

The Fichtenwalde hiking trail network was inaugurated in 2003. A cycling route to Beelitz followed in 2006, and the EuroVelo Route R1 passes directly by Fichtenwalde. A cycling path, separated from motor traffic and around 1.6 kilometres long, runs between the Beelitz districts of Fichtenwalde and Klaistow; it was completed in January 2019. The details are not interchangeable when it comes to finding your way: the destination is the focus for the cycling route to Beelitz, its course past the town for the R1, and the approximate length and separation from motor traffic for the connection between Fichtenwalde and Klaistow.

Festivals in Fichtenwalde

Viva la Fiwa is a summer festival for visitors of all ages and has been held annually in Fichtenwalde since 2009. A July 2024 description by the town of Beelitz mentions live music, market stalls, carousels, food and drink, as well as a large programme of games for children; dancing at the stage went on until 1 a.m. The programme may change from year to year. The Fichtenwalde Zapfenmarkt has been held annually since its first edition in 1990. If you are planning a trip to either festival, it is worth checking the current dates and— for Viva la Fiwa—the programme for that year.

Visiting and Getting There

The forest playground at the Hans-Grade-Haus in Fichtenwalde is themed “FOREST – We All Live Because of It”. The town of Beelitz presented the opening project and its theme in 2024. The nearest railway station to Fichtenwalde is Beelitz-Heilstätten, around five kilometres away. Check current connections before your trip, as public transport services may change.

Historical Context in the Broader Destination of Beelitz

The broader destination of Beelitz offers further historical perspectives. Beelitz’s town church was first mentioned in a document in 1247 and was initially a Romanesque pillar basilica built from hewn fieldstones. The Holy Blood legend made Beelitz the first pilgrimage site in the area east of the Elbe and possibly also in the German-speaking world; a chapel was built around 1340. The old town of Beelitz, around 800 years old, invites visitors to explore its historic buildings; the Ernst Vogel watermill is located on the edge of the old town, on Mühlenstraße. Asparagus history is also part of Beelitz’s story: in 1861, Beelitz farmer and townsman Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Herrmann was the first to grow asparagus on a commercial scale; other Beelitz residents gradually followed. The Beelitz stargazers are based in the water tower and invite visitors to events and skywatching with a “view from above”.
