Schlaubetal offers a range of nature-related themes to consider when planning your trip: the seasonal blooming of the marsh helleborine orchid, the Planfließ stream, which appears rust-red in places, and the forest and moorland habitats in the Urwald Fünfeichen and Teufelssee Special Area of Conservation. These highlights vary by season and landscape.

Nature in Schlaubetal: Blossoms, Water and Forest

In spring, you can see marsh helleborines in full bloom in the orchid meadow by the shelter. The flowering season provides a specific seasonal highlight for your plans. If you want to focus on this natural spectacle, spring is the right time to experience it.

The Planfließ is fed by various springs, some of which bring iron-rich water up from underground. As a result, the otherwise clear water appears rust-red in places. The distinctive colour brings together two observations: clear water and rust-red stretches caused by the iron-rich spring water.

The Urwald Fünfeichen and Teufelssee Special Area of Conservation covers 153.42 hectares and lies within the municipalities of Siehdichum and Schlaubetal in the Oder-Spree district. Near-natural infilled moors and mixed forests of sessile oak and pine characterise the area. The Fünfeichen primeval forest has the largest continuous stand of this mixed sessile oak and pine forest community in Brandenburg. The moorland habitats and woodland character thus complement seasonal flower-watching with another nature-related theme.

Both themes offer different points of reference for planning, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single natural highlight.

More to discover in the wider Oder-Spree destination

If your plans include other places in the wider Oder-Spree destination, you’ll find additional landscape and cultural attractions. In Bad Saarow, the Lesser Promenade runs for around 1.5 kilometres along the lakeshore, from the spa gardens to Fontane Park. Lake Scharmützel covers around 1,200 hectares and is about 30 metres deep. Its clear water has visibility of up to four metres and draws anglers, divers, sailors and swimmers to the region.

In Neuzelle, the focus includes the history of its gardens and monastery. The five-hectare Baroque garden was restored according to original plans from the 1758 abbey atlas; its features include Baroque avenues, water features and terraced landscaping. The monastery pond is in the heart of the resort town of Neuzelle, directly in front of the monastery gates. Seating by the pond offers views of the monastery complex. The Neuzelle Straw House offers a glimpse into the lives of the monastery’s former servants. The monastery brewery is another regional highlight: it is the last operating monastery brewery in Brandenburg.

Beeskow Castle is another highlight in the wider Oder-Spree destination. This listed complex brings together buildings dating from 1250 to 1550 and has a 30-metre-high keep with a viewing platform. Since the 1990s, the castle has hosted theatre performances, concerts and festivals. Public guided tours of Beeskow’s historic old town are also available; check the dates before your trip.
