Fleißdorf on the Edge of the Spreewald: Nature, History and Cycling Tours
Accommodation in Fleißdorf
Fleißdorf lies on the edge of the Spreewald in the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The Wiesenteich pond is located west of the village. The Vetschauer Mühlenfließ-Teiche Stradow Special Area of Conservation can be explored on foot from the surrounding villages. Nature, local history and cycling each have a specific local connection in Fleißdorf. Which aspects are right for your trip depends on whether you want to focus on a protected landscape, cultural roots or a named cycling tour.
Protected Area, Ponds and Watercourse
The Vetschauer Mühlenfließ-Teiche Stradow Special Area of Conservation is a protected landscape between Stradow, Naundorf and Fleißdorf. It is located in Zone III, the development zone of the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The area’s identifiers are EU No. 4150-303 and State No. 331. Visitors can explore the area on foot from the surrounding villages.
The Stradow ponds are a core habitat for the fire-bellied toad. The Vetschauer Mühlenfließ is an important waterway for the otter: it leads from the Spreewald to the inactive open-cast mining areas to the south. The ponds and watercourse therefore represent different ecological functions within the landscape.
Village History and Centre
Fleißdorf has Wendish or Sorbian roots, which are still reflected in part in the language, field names and customs. Field names connect cultural history with local names for features of the landscape; language and customs are further expressions of these roots.
On 18 May 2026, there was a maypole and a stork’s nest in the village centre. The nest’s status may vary seasonally. These specific features of the village centre complement the history and landscape themes around Fleißdorf.
Cycling Tours with Different Highlights
The Vetschauer KulTour passes through Naundorf/Fleißdorf. With its gentle gradients, it is also suitable for seniors and families with children. Another named cycling tour is the “Farm Shop Tour through the Spreewald Gem.” The Vetschau tour brochure, published in 2018, lists a route through Vetschau, Stradow, Fleißdorf, Naundorf, Burg Kolonie, Burg Dorf, Müschen and Suschow. Fleißdorf is one of the eight places named.
Different questions can help you choose a tour: Are gentle gradients important, or would you like to take in a sequence of places that includes Fleißdorf and other stops? The KulTour identifies its gradients as a feature; the Farm Shop Tour includes the places listed above. This lets you compare the two routes based on the features specified for each.
Vegetable Garden and Seasonal Produce
At the Spreewaldkorb in Fleißdorf, visitors are welcomed right in front of the vegetable garden’s greenhouses and polytunnels. The offering includes fresh seasonal vegetables grown on site and Spreewald specialties; the selection may vary seasonally. Alongside the protected area and cycling tours, the Spreewaldkorb offers a direct connection to local vegetable growing and regional products. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance, as seasonal operations may change.
