Großkoschen on Lake Senftenberg is shaped by waterside activities, a cycling route and a seasonal stage programme. Different priorities may matter during your stay: a visit to the beach, activities involving boats, a ride around the lake or a specific performance date. The town of Senftenberg encompasses Lake Senftenberg and its six districts.

Water, beach and cycling

The public marina in Großkoschen has moorings, boat hire, visitor services, accommodation and an ice cream café. Boat hire and services may vary seasonally. If you plan to rely on any of these offerings, check availability in advance.

At Hafencamp in Senftenberg’s Großkoschen district, Expeditours offers introductory sailing and stand-up paddleboarding courses. Rowing boats, pedal boats, canoes, sailboats and motorboats are also available to rent; availability may vary. Courses and rentals offer two different ways to get started with water activities: one is for trying them out, the other for choosing a type of boat.

The 18-kilometre circular route around Lake Senftenberg starts and ends in Großkoschen. It is mostly flat and largely paved, and is recommended for cyclists. Parking is available at Großkoschen Beach and Hafencamp. You can swim at Großkoschen bathing beach; there are also snack stands, restaurants and a beach bar. Parking and food and drink options may vary seasonally. A family park with accommodation is also among the offerings in Großkoschen.

The Koschen Canal is the navigable link between Lake Senftenberg and Lake Geierswalde and is used for boat trips between the lakes. Before setting off, check the applicable waterway rules and access conditions.

Amphitheatre and culture in Senftenberg

The NEUE BÜHNE Senftenberg Amphitheatre is located in Großkoschen on Lake Senftenberg and opened in May 2001. Performances take place seasonally and depend on the programme. Check the current event dates before planning a visit.

In Senftenberg’s city centre, the Museum Schloss und Festung Senftenberg and the Lausitz Art Collection are located in the castle park between the market square and the town harbour. The collection at the castle comprises more than 2,500 works by over 130 painters, graphic artists and sculptors, including works by Ernst Barlach and Carl Lohse. This offers a different cultural focus from the seasonal amphitheatre in Großkoschen: here, the focus is on the museum and collection; there, on performances by the lake.

Another historical highlight in the Senftenberg travel destination is the Marga Garden City in the Brieske district. Built in the early 20th century in the late Art Nouveau style as a residential settlement for workers of Ilse Bergbau AG, it is considered Germany’s oldest garden city. Visitors can explore its history on foot or by bicycle at eleven stops along a modern interactive and wayfinding system.
