Hohen Neuendorf: Culture, Water and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Hohen Neuendorf
Hohen Neuendorf brings together cultural history and outdoor activities, including the listed water tower, a street gallery on the edge of the Briese floodplains, cycling routes and horseback rides from Stolpe. The town also has something to offer water travellers. In the warmer months, Börnersee in Borgsdorf attracts swimmers. The range of attractions therefore extends from architectural heritage and art to tours on land and water.
Architecture, Art and Culture
The water tower is 40.75 metres tall and was built from reinforced concrete in the late Art Nouveau style. It has been a listed monument since 1994. Architecture enthusiasts can see the style, material and heritage protection come together in one building.
The water tower is generally not open to the public, but can be visited during cultural events. Before making specific plans, check whether a visit is possible as part of the event.
City Walk No. 1 takes in 15 stops through the town centre. If you plan to follow the route, check locally in advance to see whether up-to-date directions are available.
The Sculpture Boulevard is a street gallery that grew out of a cross-border exhibition project involving Hohen Neuendorf and Birkenwerder. It runs along the edge of the Briese floodplains, between Birkenwerder Town Hall and the Hohen Neuendorf water tower. Individual artworks may change.
The Stolper Abendmusiken concert series at Stolpe village church features classical music, jazz, gospel and traditional music. If you want to attend a particular concert, check the dates separately.
The nature conservation tower is a former border tower. The town library is located in the Kulturbahnhof.
On Foot, by Bike and on Horseback
From Hohen Neuendorf, cyclists can take an international cycling route towards Berlin or Copenhagen. The Havel Cycle Route focuses on nature experiences and runs parallel to the Oder-Havel Canal. Near Hohen Neuendorf, the Berlin Wall Trail passes a well-preserved former border tower. The routes differ in their direction, scenery and historical connection to the border.
Horseback rides from Stolpe lead into Stolper Heide, towards Berlin and into Tegel Forest; rides are also available at the Stolpe riding park. To choose a route, first decide whether you would prefer to explore heath and woodland or ride in the direction of Berlin.
Waterways and Seasonal Swimming
Havelbaude Marina offers guest berths for water tourists. From there, you can also explore local waterways in a traditional electrically powered tender sloep. Börnersee in Borgsdorf offers a different kind of water activity: it attracts swimmers in the warmer months. So your plans will depend on what interests you more—boating and waterways at the marina, or seasonal swimming in the lake.
