If you are looking for a hotel in Oranienburg, the town’s different attractions can help you plan your stay around your interests. The palace and museum offer insights into Baroque history and important collections; the Sachsenhausen Memorial is dedicated to several historical periods. There are also various guided tours and cycle routes, whose distances and itineraries offer different ways to explore.

Oranienburg Palace and its collections

Oranienburg Palace is one of the most important Baroque buildings in the Mark Brandenburg region. The palace museum displays paintings, including masterpieces by the Flemish artist Anthonis van Dyck, as well as selected examples of royal show silver in the Silver Vault. The architecture and collections offer two different ways to experience the site: you can explore both the Baroque palace architecture and the art and silverware on display there.

The palace also features on the cycle routes: Route 2 of the Historic Town Centres Route runs directly past it. This makes it possible to place the building within the context of this circular route, without equating the route with a visit to the museum.

Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum

At the authentic historical site, the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum commemorates the history of Sachsenhausen concentration camp from 1936 to 1945, Soviet Special Camp No. 1/7 from 1945 to 1950, and the development of the National Memorial and Museum from 1945 to 1961. This chronology shows that the site’s history spans several distinct periods.

Thirteen permanent exhibitions can be visited in the camp’s surviving buildings. Each exhibition’s thematic focus is linked to the corresponding location. This gives visitors the opportunity to engage with the topics in their historical setting. The Memorial and Museum also offers an extensive educational programme.

Guided tours and different perspectives

The Oranienburg tourism portal offers various themed tours and individually bookable tours for groups, families or individuals. The formats listed include tours on foot, by bicycle or by bus. If you would like to include a guided tour in your plans, you can choose between different themes and formats; the specific focus depends on the tour.

The town’s guided tours are distinct from the Memorial’s educational programme: the former include guided discovery tours and themed tours in Oranienburg, while the latter is part of the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum. This distinction helps clarify the different types of interpretation on offer.

Cycle routes by itinerary and distance

The 300-kilometre Regional Park Route “Around Berlin” runs through the Oranienburg municipal area from Leegebruch through Eden to the palace. It then passes through the centre and continues via the Lehnitz lock to Schmachtenhagen and Wensickendorf. Check current route conditions before setting off.

The approximately 300-kilometre Fontane Cycle Route starts in Oranienburg and leads through Brandenburg in the footsteps of the poet and thinker Theodor Fontane. By contrast, the 50-kilometre Dutchmen’s Circular Route connects the towns of Liebenwalde and Oranienburg. The Lakes and Culture Cycle Route is a 215-kilometre circular route in the Ruppiner Land region, connecting Neuruppin, Rheinsberg and Oranienburg, among other places.

These descriptions show different types of routes: a connection between two towns, a circular route and two longer routes linked to Oranienburg. Of the routes with a stated distance, the Dutchmen’s Circular Route is the shortest at 50 kilometres. The Fontane Cycle Route starts in the town; the Regional Park Route passes through several Oranienburg districts and by the palace along its described route. For Historic Town Centres Route 2, the focus is instead on its direct course past the palace; it connects Gransee and Kremmen in a circular route.
