Kleßen-Görne between castle, culture and nature
Kleßen-Görne offers a range of themes for a trip: the architectural history of Kleßen Castle, historic gardens, museums, the village church, and nature and water destinations. If you are looking for a hotel, you can assess the area based on whether culture, landscape or cycling is your priority during your stay.
Castle, manor garden and park
Kleßen Castle was built in 1723 as a three-wing complex. In 1858, it was redesigned in the Neoclassical style, and an impressive courtyard was also created. The two dates mark different phases in the castle’s history: its original construction and its later transformation.
The English Park was laid out by the von Bredow family in 1797. Historically, it served as a path from the Märkischer Manor Garden to Lake Kleßen. Philosophical paths lead to a family tree, a swing overlooking the fields and a vineyard. Thus, the park’s former function as a route and its individual destinations sit alongside its design history.
The Märkischer Manor Garden is generally open to the public; the key is available at the Toy Museum. As access arrangements may change, check them on site before your visit.
Museums and village church
The Toy Museum displays examples of the German toy industry from the past two centuries in seven rooms. It is part of the Kleßen manor house complex, which includes the castle, the Märkischer Manor Garden and the former village school.
The Children’s Book Museum presents early picture-book history, including Orbis sensualium pictus from 1714. The Toy Museum and Children’s Book Museum focus on different aspects of culture: examples of the toy industry at the former, and early picture books at the latter.
Kleßen Village Church was built in 1698 as a half-timbered church. It was extensively renovated in 1913 and completed as a plastered building.
Nature, water and cycling
The Görner See nature reserve covers about 226 hectares. It protects reed beds, swamp forests and wet meadows, and provides a habitat for rare amphibians and reptiles as well as numerous bird species.
Lake Kleßen is close to the village. It has a bathing beach, a large sunbathing lawn and a playground. Check whether the facilities are available before your visit. The two lakes represent different themes: Lake Görne is about protected habitats, while Lake Kleßen offers the named bathing and leisure facilities.
In Görne, the Sternenhonig honey forge offers honey from its own beehives at an old smithy. Check in advance whether it is open.
You can reach Kleßen via detours from the Havelland Cycle Route and the Tour Brandenburg. This adds the village’s connection to a cycling route as a planning consideration, alongside its cultural and natural attractions. In the Havelland, you can also use the numbered junction signage to plan your own cycling routes.
