Cycling tours in Massen and the wider Elbe-Elster destination

The 30-kilometer “Landscape between Moated Castle & Industrial Heritage” cycling tour starts and ends at the village green in Massen. It passes through several towns; Massen is its starting and ending point, not the entire tour setting. The route offers a way to combine a visit to the town with a longer cycling tour.

The wider Elbe-Elster destination offers longer cycling options: the Apple Route is 65 kilometers long and includes a guided tour of the Pomological Garden in Döllingen. Check the current dates for the tour. The 200-kilometer “Coal, Wind and Water Tour” brings the history of energy production to life through the elements. Another route option is the Elster Cycle Route: it is a circular tour, passes old mills, and runs through the heart of the Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft Nature Park. The tours therefore differ not only in length, but also in their themes and landscapes.

Industrial heritage and museums in the Elbe-Elster destination

The wider Elbe-Elster destination offers several industrial heritage sites. The Louise briquette factory in Domsdorf is Europe’s oldest surviving briquette factory; it began operating in 1882. The F60 visitor mine is also in Elbe-Elster district, south of Lichterfeld. Visitors to the mine can explore nearby Lake Bergheider by bicycle or Segway, or take a walk along its long beach. The MĂĽhlberg 1547 Museum focuses on the meeting of armies in 1547, which shaped the course of the Reformation, and bears the European Heritage Label. Since January 2015, four major museums in Elbe-Elster district have formed a joint museum network.

Nature and regional highlights in Elbe-Elster

If you would like to plan nature experiences, you can join excursions in Elbe-Elster with a ranger from the Nature Conservation Service to identify birdsong, find rare plants, and observe wildlife. Dates may vary, so check current options in advance. For garden enthusiasts, the 65-kilometer Apple Route offers another perspective on the region: it includes a guided tour of the Pomological Garden in Döllingen.

Another regional highlight can be found in Schlieben. Wine has been grown again on the southern slope of Langer Berg since 1992; more than 2,000 vines of the “Müller-Thurgau” and “Bacchus” varieties now grow there. On a guided tour, you can learn about and taste Schlieben wine; check current packages in advance. The historic Kellerstraße in Schlieben is also part of the cultural landscape, with more than 30 wine cellars dug into Langer Berg since around 1540. In addition to cycling and industrial heritage, the wider Elbe-Elster destination therefore offers wine growing and historic cellars as distinct themes.
