Bad Liebenwerda combines a restored town centre with a spa park and attractions spanning culture and nature. Different interests may influence your plans for your stay: local history, a walk in the park, a river-themed hike or a visit to the nature park centre. The sights and tours offer specific starting points for exploring.

Spa park and restored town centre

The spa park stretches between the town centre of Bad Liebenwerda and the Weinberge district, along the Schwarze Elster and Dresdener StraĂźe. A town walk leads from the market square, past the town hall and Lubwart Tower, to the spa park. It passes through the restored town centre, whose history dates back more than 800 years. This route lets you explore historic urban spaces and the park together.

A guided tour of the 25-hectare spa park covers Frederick William III and the donation of the park to the local community. Other topics include Lovers’ Island, the Otto-Kloss Garden, natural spa ponds and a stone monument. The tour thus combines the park’s history with its named sites and landscape features.

The spa concerts at the spa park’s bandstand have been a tradition for 187 years and are a regular fixture on Bad Liebenwerda’s events calendar. If you would like to include a concert in your stay, check the dates before your trip.

Town walks, hiking and cycling

A two-hour town walk starts at the district museum at the foot of Lubwart Tower and passes through the restored town centre, with its landmarks, to the REISS Museum. Together with the route from the market square to the spa park, it offers another way to explore the town centre. After its renovation, Lubwart Tower was reopened for use by the residents and visitors of Bad Liebenwerda in 2011.

If you would rather go for a hike than take one of the town walks, consider the 3 Rivers Tour: it passes through the spa town, is eight kilometres long and is listed as taking 120 minutes. Three rivers flank its route. So, of the two activities, each listed as taking around two hours, you can choose between a restored town centre and its landmarks, or a hike with a river theme. Check the route details before setting out, as route information may change.

Bicycles can also be part of your plans. The Bad Liebenwerda Tourist Information Office rents bicycles with 26- and 28-inch wheels as well as e-bikes, and offers suggested routes. If you are planning to rent a bike, check current availability before you arrive.

Museums, church and nature park centre

The Central German Marionette Theatre Museum’s “Kasper’s Worlds” exhibition traces the history of the Kasper puppet in puppet theatre. The exhibition is housed in a completely redesigned museum. The Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart offers a different cultural highlight: it was built in 1883 and is located at Südring 2.

At the nature park centre in Bad Liebenwerda, visitors can learn about the landscape and the flora and fauna of the nature park, including the endangered capercaillie.

Regional context: Elbe-Elster

The wider Elbe-Elster destination offers a different focus through its industrial heritage. The Louise Briquette Factory in Domsdorf is Europe’s oldest surviving briquette factory. The Plessa power station is one of Europe’s oldest lignite power stations and has retained its original structure. These regional themes complement Bad Liebenwerda, where visitors can explore the spa park, town centre, museums and nature.
