Discover Elsterwerda
Accommodation in Elsterwerda
Elsterwerda offers several distinct themes for a stay: the Kleine Galerie combines a historic half-timbered house with a permanent exhibition and cultural events, while the miniature park offers its own expansive focus. The riverside activities also differ: you can hike along the Schwarze Elster and cycle along the Pulsnitz. When planning your trip, you can therefore weigh up culture, a park visit, and cycling and hiking options.
Culture in a historic half-timbered house
The historic half-timbered house that is home to the Kleine Galerie “Hans Nadler” was built around 1720/1725. The upper floor features a permanent exhibition about the painter Hans Nadler. The gallery also offers book readings, music evenings and talks, among other events. This brings together a permanent artist-focused exhibition and a range of event formats. If you include cultural interests in your travel plans, you will find both a permanent exhibition and events spanning literature, music and talks here.
Miniatures and motorsport in the park
Elsterwerda Miniature Park covers more than 30,000 square metres of parkland and features 150 unique miniatures. The park is also home to the “Kleiner Lausitzring,” where visitors can experience motorsport. Its size, miniature displays and motorsport theme give the park a distinctive character alongside the gallery. This offers two different focal points for your stay: the exhibition about Hans Nadler in the half-timbered house and the diverse attractions across the expansive parkland.
Hiking and cycling around Elsterwerda
Visitors can hike along the Schwarze Elster and cycle along the Pulsnitz. A network of cycle routes makes it possible to explore Elsterwerda and the surrounding area. The river routes are clearly differentiated: hiking is associated with the Schwarze Elster, while cycling is associated with the Pulsnitz. The network of cycle routes adds the option of including the surrounding area in your own trip planning, alongside these specific riverside routes.
The Coal, Wind & Water Tour offers another route: it passes through Elsterwerda and invites visitors to stop at the Elsterwerda post mill. Alongside activities by the rivers, the local attractions therefore include a specific stopping point at a named mill. Elsterwerda is also described as a gateway to the “Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft” Nature Park. If you are interested in nature and landscapes, you can consider this connection alongside the hiking and cycling options.
Industrial and cultural history in the wider Elbe-Elster destination
The wider Elbe-Elster destination also offers additional regional themes. The Louise briquette factory in Domsdorf is the oldest preserved briquette factory in Europe. Visitors can experience working historic machinery there and discover steam engines. Plessa Power Station is one of Europe’s oldest lignite-fired power stations and has been preserved in its original structural form. Visitors can see authentic power station technology from the 1920s. The guided “Path of Coal” tour passes through the outdoor bunker, boiler house, turbine hall, control room and transformer area.
The museums also form a distinctive regional focus: since January 2015, four important museums in the Elbe-Elster district have been organised as a joint museum network. The Museum MĂĽhlberg 1547 explores the meeting of the armies in 1547, which shaped the course of the Reformation, and bears the European Heritage Label. These examples broaden the picture of Elsterwerda to include industrial and cultural history across the wider Elbe-Elster destination.
