Ahrensfelde can be explored for travel planning through two themes: the historic ensemble around the village church and the trails around the Ostkirchhof cemetery. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you set your priorities—local history, walks or arriving by train.

Church and cemetery: a historic ensemble

Ahrensfelde Cemetery, next to the village church, forms a protected historic ensemble with the adjoining rectory and surrounds the Protestant church located there. It has served as a burial ground since the first mention of Ahrensfelde in 1375. This connects local history with a specific place where the cemetery, church and rectory have a distinctive spatial relationship.

The Ostkirchhof Ahrensfelde cemetery is a separate site. While the protected ensemble and burial history are the focus at the cemetery by the village church, the Ostkirchhof is characterized by its woodland-like atmosphere and mature trees. The Ostkirchhof is inviting for walks and appeals to a different interest than the churchyard with its historic ensemble.

Walks and trail routes

The Ostkirchhof is also a reference point for two different route descriptions. The section of the Five Churches Trail from Ahrensfelde to Lindenberg passes by the Ostkirchhof. The Wuhle Hiking Trail, by contrast, begins north of the cemetery and runs to Köpenick. For orientation, it is helpful to distinguish the section of the trail that passes the cemetery from the starting point of the Wuhle Hiking Trail.

The Wuhle River itself is also connected with the Ostkirchhof: it rises north of the cemetery. This means that both the river’s source and the beginning of the hiking trail are north of the Ostkirchhof; the trail continues to Köpenick. The river and the hiking trail can therefore be considered two different points of reference for planning.

Rail connections for travel planning

Ahrensfelde station is the starting point and destination of the Barnimer Feldmark Park Tour. The S7 and RB25 lines are listed there. If you are combining your journey with a tour, these are two different points of reference: the Park Tour identifies the station as its start and finish, while the line listings provide the rail connection. Additional themes in the wider Barnim travel destination

The wider Barnim travel destination offers further distinct themes. Chorin Abbey is a key work of North German Brick Gothic architecture. The Niederfinow Boat Lift is Germany’s oldest still-operating boat lift; the Finow Canal is Germany’s oldest still-navigable artificial waterway. The Ice Age Geopark on the Oder Edge is also part of this regional context: it extends across the Uckermark and Barnim districts in northeastern Brandenburg.

There are different activities to choose from in Barnim. Cycling in Barnim Nature Park is a popular visitor activity. The cycling network in Barnim district is 610 kilometers long in total; distinct from this is the 143-kilometer “Around the Schorfheide” circular hiking trail, which runs through Barnim Nature Park. One figure describes a cycling network, the other a named hiking route.

Numerous swimming lakes in Barnim offer opportunities to relax. Lake cruises are available on Lake Werbellin, and canoe tours are possible on the Finow Canal. Alongside cycling and hiking trails, there are also different water-based activities to choose from as regional themes. These suggestions for Barnim as a whole complement the focus on Ahrensfelde, whose specific local attractions are primarily the cemetery ensemble, the Ostkirchhof and the routes described above.
