In Eschenlohe, hiking and cycling tours shape the range of activities on offer. More than 30 trails lead through the area and can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on cross-country skis. In addition, more than 20 day trips either start in Eschenlohe or pass through the area as a stop along the way. When planning your trip, it is worth comparing specific routes by length, course and starting point.

Hiking: Gorge views and circular trails

A hike across the Katzensteg to the Asam Gorge bridge begins and ends at Eschenlohe station, BahnhofstraĂźe 15. The path climbs uphill to the bridge, where you can look down into the gorge. The Asam Gorge is characterized by rugged, steep rock faces. This hike combines the climb via the Katzensteg with a view into the gorge from the bridge.

Two circular trails offer further points of comparison. The hike to the historic Hartsteinwerk permanent exhibition in Eschenlohe is 5.40 kilometers long. It is rated very easy, with very low fitness requirements. The circular hike to the Seven Springs, through the Archtal Gorge and across the Asam Gorge bridge covers 7.74 kilometers. It is rated easy and designated as a family tour. The two routes differ in length by 2.34 kilometers; they also have different stated destinations: one focuses on the historic permanent exhibition, while the other combines springs, gorge and bridge in a scenic loop.

Cycling through the Murnauer Moos

The cycling tour through the Murnauer Moos begins and ends at the parking lot by the Eschenlohe exit on the A95 motorway. The 28.34-kilometer circular route passes through Grafenaschau and Murnau before returning to Eschenlohe. Its difficulty and fitness requirements are rated very easy. The route is suitable for cycling, gravel biking and mountain biking. This makes it quite different from the shorter circular hikes: it connects several places on a longer loop and is designated for various types of bicycle.

The more than 30 trails and over 20 day trips offer different ways to experience Eschenlohe on foot, by bicycle or on cross-country skis. Each of the specific examples has its own focus: a climb to the Asam Gorge bridge, circular hikes of varying lengths, and a cycling tour through the Murnauer Moos.

A historical highlight in Eschenlohe

The Nikolaus Chapel on Vestbichl also offers a historical highlight. In 1628, Abbot Ottmar of Ettal had it built from the remains of a crumbling castle tower. The building’s origins and the date of its construction give a visit a specific historical context alongside the tours through the surrounding countryside.

More experiences in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

In the Garmisch-Partenkirchen destination, the Partnach Gorge offers another gorge experience: visitors can walk through the gorge and take in its massive rock faces and the water rushing below. It was declared a natural monument and opened to visitors in 1912. The 1,780-meter-high Wank, Partenkirchen’s local mountain, offers a different perspective. It is ideal for leisurely mountain hikes with far-reaching views. The Wank cable car takes you directly from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the summit; access by mountain railway is subject to operating conditions, which you can check before planning your visit.
