The Parish Church and Its History

The Evangelical Lutheran parish church in Woringen is the former Church of St. Mary. It was built after 1450 by the Möttelin lords and the local community. Four predecessor churches stood north of the present church; excavations confirmed their location in 1959. The first Protestant service was held in the parish church on December 6, 1532. The predecessor buildings, construction after 1450 and the 1532 service mark different stages in the church’s history.

Tower Spire, Frescoes and Furnishings

The parish church’s Gothic tower spire is covered with brightly glazed roof tiles. It probably dates from the period when the present church was built. Frescoes in the chancel were uncovered in 1968; they date to 1490–1500 and are attributed to the Strigel workshop. The furnishings also reflect different periods: the Neo-Gothic altar dates from 1892 and was made by the Vogt artistic woodcarving workshop in Memmingen. The Baroque pulpit is one of the oldest in the district; Johann Friedrich Sichelbein I painted it in 1661. The tower spire, frescoes, altar and pulpit thus offer different points of reference for viewing the church through time.

Agricultural Learning Trail and Farm Visits

The Woringen Agricultural Learning Trail is about five kilometers long and marked with a green tree symbol. Three dairy farms can be visited along the trail, with information about livestock keeping and feeding. Advance registration is required for these farm visits. The approximate route length and green marker help you include the trail in your plans; visits to the farms are a separate activity that requires advance registration.

Sports Facilities in Woringen

The leisure complex at the sports ground includes areas for football, skating, beach volleyball and hockey, as well as a bocce court. Training for beginners and advanced players is offered at the beach volleyball court on Wednesdays. Confirm the schedule locally before taking part, and check the facility’s current status before visiting. There are also three sand courts belonging to the tennis club on the edge of the forest in Woringen. Check locally in advance to confirm their current availability. This lets you distinguish between the sports areas at the leisure complex, the regular beach volleyball training and the tennis courts when planning.

Woringen in the Unterallgäu

Other historic buildings in the wider destination of Unterallgäu form a distinct regional highlight. The Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren and Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim are among the Unterallgäu’s important architectural monuments. The Fugger Castle in Kirchheim features the world-famous Cedar Hall; the former imperial charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls. These buildings represent the regional perspective on the Unterallgäu. The parish church remains the specific historical landmark in Woringen.
