Oberwarngau: Churches, Pilgrimage and Trails on Taubenberg
Accommodation in Oberwarngau
A hotel stay in Oberwarngau can be planned around your interests: churches and pilgrimage offer a focus on cultural history, while a hike up Taubenberg and a cycling tour provide other activities. In the municipality of Warngau, seasonal leisure options as well as train and bus connections round out the offering.
Churches and history
St. John the Baptist stands on Kirchbichl in Oberwarngau. In its present form, the church was built around 1500 as a late Gothic structure of tuff blocks. The portal and the star vault inside date from this period; three high altar figures from the first half of the 16th century have also been preserved. This makes it possible to distinguish the period of the church’s present form from the slightly later dating of the figures.
The pilgrimage church of Allerheiligen offers another way to explore the area’s history. It stands on an old country road that formerly connected Oberwarngau with Tegernsee Monastery. Allerheiligen has been documented as a pilgrimage church since the late 17th century; it acquired its final Baroque form between 1739 and 1754. Every year, on the fourth Sunday in October, the Warngau Leonhardi pilgrimage makes its way to this church. It includes a church service and the blessing of the horse-drawn carriages and riders.
Art and local history
The large Lenten veil in Oberwarngau measures 435 × 280 cm and is used in St. John the Baptist for its original liturgical purpose. Its seasonal display may vary. If you would specifically like to see the veil, check before your trip whether it is currently on display. The excavations at the so-called Kaiserbichl in Oberwarngau also offer a historical reference point: they show that Warngau’s roots date back at least to the 6th century AD.
Hiking, cycling and scenic flights
The mountain hike up Taubenberg starts in the center of Oberwarngau. A cycling tour of around half an hour in the municipality of Warngau starts at the pilgrimage church of Allerheiligen, passes over Taubenberg and through Hinterberg, and goes by the “Ludwiger” farm. Along the way, there are views of meadows and hills. Scenic flights with experienced pilots are also offered at the airfield in Oberwarngau.
The key to the historic observation tower on Taubenberg is kept at the nearby Berggasthof Taubenberg and is issued against a deposit. As this arrangement may change, check the current details before your visit.
