Discover Wackersdorf: Mining History and Recreation
Accommodation in Wackersdorf
Wackersdorf combines the history of lignite mining with cultural and recreational activities. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, you can choose based on whether local history, trails through the former mining area, or activities at Lake Murner are your main focus. ProKart Raceland also offers a distinctive attraction with its indoor and outdoor tracks.
Local History and Mining Landscape
The Wackersdorf Local History and Industrial Museum tells the story of the town, its society, and its industry through changing times. Geotope 99, “Wackersdorf Lignite,” is located right next to the museum. The geotope was formed from the former “Westfeld” mining area; a coal seam is still visible there today, south of the main town of Wackersdorf.
The 4.8 km museum trail runs through a former, now-reclaimed mining area and passes Geotope 99 and the Tertiary Forest. A roughly 5 km museum trail connects the Wackersdorf Local History and Industrial Museum with the Lignite and Local History Museum in Steinberg am See. The two length figures provide different points of reference: the 4.8 km trail is described in terms of the mining area, geotope, and Tertiary Forest, while the roughly 5 km route is defined by its two museums as endpoints.
Recreation Between the Track and the Water
World and European Championships are held at ProKart Raceland in Wackersdorf. Visitors can also drive on the track themselves. The indoor track is almost 500 m long, while the outdoor track is around 1.2 km long, making it considerably longer. Championship dates may vary. If you want to watch a race, check the event schedule for your stay.
There are two Kneipp facilities in Wackersdorf. The natural Kneipp facility at Lake Murner is right by the nature trail; the second facility is below the Panorama Pool and has an herb garden. This Kneipp facility is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April 29 to October 31. Check the seasonal opening hours before your visit.
The Wasser-Fisch-Natur Adventure Park is a family highlight at Lake Murner. The park’s play area is open from April to October; check the latest information before traveling. The paths and sanitary facilities are accessible, but not wheelchair-accessible. There are designated disabled parking spaces in front of the adventure park. Confirm the current arrangements for the designated disabled parking spaces before traveling.
The Upper Palatinate Fairy-Tale Garden, established by the Municipality of Wackersdorf, is located along the circular route around Lake Murner. Stories come to life there on display panels, in illustrations, and through wooden sculptures. The presentation combines stories with visual and three-dimensional depictions, creating a distinctive cultural highlight alongside the themes of mining and motorsports.
