Griesstätt reveals itself through art in the town center, a long history and routes across the municipality. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between places within the municipality: some points of interest are in the town of Griesstätt, while churches and hiking routes also take in other parts of the municipality. This way, when choosing a hotel, you can decide whether to focus mainly on local art, church architecture or a particular route.

Art in the Town Center

The Marienbrunnen (Fountain of Mary) in front of the parish church in the center of the village is considered the most remarkable work by an artist in Griesstätt.

Works by Hans Huschka

The bronze sculpture “John the Baptist” by Hans Huschka stands in front of the primary school. It depicts the Old and New Testaments, with John the Baptist as the mediator between them. Huschka’s works in Griesstätt also include the entrance plaque at the town hall. These three art landmarks are thus spread across the parish church, primary school and town hall.

History and Churches in the Municipality

The name Griesstätt was first mentioned in 924: it appears in a document issued by Duke Arnulf of Bavaria, known as the “Rihni Charter.” A later church donation is recorded for 1205: Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg donated the church at Griesstätt to the neighboring Attel Monastery. These two dates mark distinct historical reference points—the first mention of the name and the donation of the church.

The monastery church of St. Peter and Paul stands in Altenhohenau, a place within the municipality of Griesstätt. The Altenhohenau Dominican convent, founded in 1235 by Count Conrad of Wasserburg, was granted estates upon its foundation that now lie within the municipality of Griesstätt. The church is a Baroque building dating from around 1670/75, incorporating older sections dating back to 1235. It is also associated with works of great artistic significance by Matthäus and Ignaz Günther.

The Maria Schnee branch church in Holzhausen, also within the municipality, offers a different architectural style. It is a small Baroque hall church dating from the second half of the 17th century, with a western roof turret and interior furnishings. By comparison, St. Peter and Paul’s new building, dating from around 1670/75, and its incorporated older sections form a distinct building history.

Distinguishing Hiking and Cycling Routes

Two hiking routes can be distinguished by their location within the municipality. The northern route runs through Altenhohenau, Kerschdorf, Streifl, Moosham and Kettenham to Griesstätt. In the southern part of the municipality, the second route runs through Kettenham, Bergham, Holzhausen, Untermühle and Edenberg to Griesstätt. Kettenham appears on both lists; the other places distinguish the northern route from the southern one.

The Inn Cycle Path and the Mozartradweg also run through the municipality of Griesstätt. One specific destination is given for the eastern variant of the Inn Cycle Path: it runs via Vogtareuth and Griesstätt to the old town of Wasserburg am Inn, which is surrounded by the Inn on seven eighths of its perimeter. The described stage is 65 kilometers long.

The Griesstätt municipal administration has numerous hiking and cycling maps available. If you need a particular edition, it is worth checking in advance, as individual map editions may change. You can use the maps and the corresponding lists of places together when planning your tour.
