Neuendettelsau offers a variety of themes for your stay: the history of the castle, exhibitions and trails for exploring the town and its surroundings. A digital town tour, a marked hiking trail network and two cycling routes on different themes offer a range of ways to combine culture and activity. The historical span ranges from the castle’s oldest structural elements to the time of Wilhelm Löhe in the 19th century.

Culture and history in Neuendettelsau

The castle in Neuendettelsau is a historical landmark. Its oldest structural elements are dated to around 1200. This dating refers to the oldest parts, not to a single year of construction for the entire castle.

The Löhe Era Museum depicts living conditions during the time when Wilhelm Löhe was a pastor in Neuendettelsau in the mid-19th century. The Löhe Trail also explores his story: At its stops, you can follow in Wilhelm Löhe’s footsteps and learn about the history of diaconal work and the community of Neuendettelsau. The museum and trail thus shed light on the same historical figure from different perspectives.

The “einBlick” mission exhibition offers a different thematic focus. Using art and everyday objects, displays, information panels and videos, it provides insights into the lives of people in Papua New Guinea, Africa, Asia and Brazil. The exhibition also offers opportunities to meet people from the partner churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria. Its themes therefore extend beyond local history and turn the focus to a range of ways of life.

Town tour, hiking trails and cycling routes

The digital town tour starts in the town centre and leads through Neuendettelsau, stopping at various points along the way. It takes about an hour and a half and covers approximately one kilometre on foot. The free tour is available via the Actionbound app. Before your trip, check whether digital access is still available. By combining a short distance with a longer duration, the tour gives you time to discover each stop.

The well-developed, signposted network of hiking trails offers more options for exploring on foot. It includes circular routes for walks and shorter hikes, as well as longer routes between the districts and to the Kernfranken partner communities.

The two themed cycling routes differ considerably in format and focus. The 67.6-kilometre Kernfranken Cycle Route is a circular tour through the area of the Kernfranken Municipal Alliance, which includes Neuendettelsau. It follows cycle paths and quiet side roads; check current route conditions before setting off. The approximately 95-kilometre Hohenzollern Adventure Cycle Route passes through 13 towns, including Neuendettelsau, and offers insights into Hohenzollern history between Nuremberg and Ansbach. Here, the focus is on the historical theme, whereas the Kernfranken route is designed as a circular tour. Route details may change, so check them before your ride.
