Gerolsbach: Discover Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Gerolsbach
Explore Gerolsbach via two hiking trails and distinctive historical sites. The Eulenthal Hiking Trail and the Ähren Route – Short Version each have a different focus; other points of interest include the parish church with its Marian column and traces of the former Gerolseck Castle. If you’re planning a stay, you can read the route descriptions for their specific waypoints while also exploring the area’s architecture and history.
Hiking Trails with Different Waypoints
The Eulenthal Hiking Trail starts at the town hall square in Gerolsbach and continues along Pfaffenhofener Straße to Singenbach, passing the adventure playground. It then follows a cycle path to Klenau; numerous benches along the route invite you to take a break. As you cross the Gerolsbach stream, the trail offers a view across the valley.
The Ähren Route – Short Version passes a wayside cross, a wayside shrine beneath a chestnut tree, and a sports ground with a playground. It also passes a cemetery with a chapel and memorial cross. One route option runs through a patch of woodland to Bockhof; alternatively, the hike can be extended by one and a half kilometres towards Oberwengen and Gröbern. The route descriptions highlight different features: Singenbach and Klenau are named waypoints on the Eulenthal trail, while the Ähren Route focuses on individual landmarks and optional extensions.
Church and Historical Traces
Gerolsbach’s parish church was partly Romanesque and predominantly Early Baroque. After the village fire of 2 August 1846, the church was rebuilt, with only a few remains preserved. Its early architectural features and the extensive rebuilding after the fire thus represent different phases in the area’s history.
A Marian column stands beside the parish church on the grounds of the former cemetery. Its limestone statue of the Virgin Mary dates from 1875. The column and the church are right next to each other, while their historical associations date from different periods.
No stones remain today at the site of the former Gerolseck Castle. Its past is recalled by a collapsed moat and the names “Schloßberg” and “Schloßgarten.” The moat and the names passed down through the years thus tell of the former castle grounds.
