Herz-Jesu Church: Neo-Baroque architecture and listed monument
Herz-Jesu Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in Pechbrunn in the northern Upper Palatinate. Built in the Neo-Baroque style between 1913 and 1916, it was designed by master builder August Mayer. Today, it is a listed monument. Its furnishings are also attributed to specific artists: the high altar, pulpit and PietĂ were made by South Tyrolean artist Josef Rifeser from Ortisei in Val Gardena. The construction period, style and three works offer different architectural-history perspectives on the parish church.
Chapel on SteinhĂĽbel and the landscape
The chapel on Steinhübel lies on the southeastern edge of Pechbrunn, just before an isolated farmstead, and offers views across the municipality. It can be viewed from the outside year-round. Its location and views make it a destination in its own right for anyone who would also like to take in Pechbrunn’s townscape during their trip.
Pechbrunn lies on the edge of the Steinwald. The Teichelberg Nature Reserve is located in the surrounding area. It covers 115 hectares and protects valuable broadleaf forest on a basalt hill. For those interested in the landscape, options include both Pechbrunn’s location on the edge of the Steinwald and a nearby protected area with a clearly defined conservation purpose.
Possible half-day tours associated with Pechbrunn include the Großbüchlberg Loop and “Zu den Hankerln.” Check the route details before setting off. This lets you plan your tours based on current information rather than relying solely on their description as half-day tours.
Further impressions in the wider destination of Tirschenreuth
In the wider destination of Tirschenreuth, the MuseumsQuartier offers a different thematic focus from Pechbrunn’s church architecture. It combines the Upper Palatinate Fisheries Museum with six other specialized exhibitions and is housed in a former monastery. Visitors can explore almost 1,000 years of fishing and fish farming history there and see native fish in four large aquariums. The MuseumsQuartier regularly hosts special exhibitions, lectures, readings and concerts. If you would like to plan your visit around an event, check the specific dates in advance.
In the center of Tirschenreuth’s Fischhofpark are the historic Fischhof Bridge and the Fischhof, which houses the district court. The culinary traditions of Tirschenreuth district also add to this regional perspective: the area is best known for Zoigl, the cult beer of the Upper Palatinate Forest, and carp from the pond landscapes of the “Land of 1,000 Ponds.” Thus, in the wider destination, regional drinks and the pond landscape are distinct themes alongside fishing and fish farming.
