Neustadt a.d.Waldnaab combines a historic town centre, castles and glassmaking history with opportunities for walks and cycling tours. The historic town square is defined by St. George’s Parish Church and the Old and New Castles. These sights give the town a distinct historical character; the Bockl Cycle Path also offers a longer route along a former railway line.

Castles, town history and museums

The Old Castle is a Late Gothic building with discernible architectural history dating back to the 15th century. Its features include a three-storey gabled structure and bay windows. The New Castle has a different story: construction began under Philip Hyazinth von Lobkowitz, following plans by Antonio della Porta, in 1698 and continued until 1702, but the building was never completed. A small Baroque garden was laid out behind the Old Castle. Part of the late-medieval town wall has also been preserved.

The town museum is housed in a former school building dating from the 17th century. The building was renovated over a four-year period and opened as a town museum in 1989. The Town and Glass Museum explores the history of glass, the lives of glassmakers and the history of the town; its subjects also include the history of the Lobkowitz family and Emperor Charles IV. A permanent exhibition on the second floor of the New Lobkowitz Castle is devoted to the castle’s history, the Lobkowitz family and their nearly 250 years of rule in Neustadt/WN and the surrounding area.

The churches, too, tell stories of different eras. The Catholic pilgrimage church of St. Felix was built from 1738 to 1746; its interior was completed in 1765. From St. Felix, the view stretches across Neustadt and the surrounding area towards Weiden in der Oberpfalz. St. George’s Parish Church probably dates from the 12th century, was first mentioned in 1340 and was rebuilt in 1737. The district of Mühlberg is also home to the pilgrimage church of St. Anne.

The Bockl Cycle Path offers a different kind of route. It runs from Neustadt a.d.Waldnaab to Eslarn along a former railway line and is 52 kilometres long. The two routes therefore differ considerably in length and mode of transport: a short cultural walk on foot versus a longer cycling route. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on a compact walk or an extended cycling tour.

Guided tours and local refreshments

Guided tours of the Old and New Lobkowitz Castles can be arranged. They cover the history of the castles and their ceiling paintings. Please arrange your visit locally in advance, as tour arrangements may change.
