Burgtreswitz brings together the history of its castle complex and village church with cultural heritage trails. When planning your trip, you may also be interested in the conditions for castle tours and the different routes.

Burgtreswitz Castle and Its History

The medieval castle complex of Burgtreswitz Castle was largely burned down by imperial troops during the Thirty Years’ War. Burgtreswitz Castle probably dates back to a foundation by the Counts of Sulzbach in the early 12th century. Both sites offer insight into the complex’s long history.

The castle museum features a model of a glass polishing workshop and a shoemaker’s workshop. Access to the museum is limited to castle tours. The castle is also home to a nature park information center with a permanent exhibition. Burgtreswitz Castle is accessible; a passenger lift is available.

Maria Immaculata Village Church

The village church also makes its own distinctive impression: Anna and Joachim, Mary’s parents, are depicted on either side of the altar in the “Maria Immaculata” church. In January 2020, the village church was 160 years old. This age refers to that point in time, not to a current anniversary.

Cycle Route and Trails Around Burgtreswitz

The Pfreimdtal Cycle Route runs from Pfreimd via Trausnitz, Tännesberg, Burgtreswitz, Moosbach and Lohma to Eslarn. History Trail 1 follows a different route: it runs from Moosbach via Burgtreswitz, Isgier and Heumaden back to Moosbach and is 18 km long. The two routes therefore differ both in their course and in that History Trail 1 returns to Moosbach.

Tours and Events at the Castle

Participation in the 2026 guided tours of Burgtreswitz Castle is free of charge; at least six participants are required. Registration must be completed by 12 noon two days in advance. Another tour is the historically spooky castle experience tour “Gënsbloud & G’schling,” which takes visitors through the castle complex.

A Christmas market is held in and around Burgtreswitz Castle on the second weekend of Advent. There are also various rooms available for private celebrations: weddings and birthdays can be celebrated in the “Neuer Saal,” the “Bräustüberl” or the “Weinkeller” of the medieval castle. Arrange the details directly.
