Schrobenhausen combines a historic old town with museums and a strong asparagus tradition. The town center is surrounded by a town wall dating from the 15th century. Preserved sections of the wall, defensive towers and a green rampart shape its historic character. The town also has an annual rhythm in which asparagus traditionally plays a special role. This gives you several points of interest to consider when planning your trip: you can explore the old town, the museums or the region’s asparagus culture.

Old Town and Museum Quarter

The historic town wall surrounds Schrobenhausen’s old town. The preserved sections of the wall, defensive towers and green rampart are all part of this ensemble. The Town Museum in Pflegschloss and the European Asparagus Museum are located in the Museum Quarter, right next to the historic wall. Together, the museums and the town fortifications form a cultural focal point within Schrobenhausen.

Two dated objects are a specific highlight of the European Asparagus Museum’s collection: an asparagus-shaped lidded box from Meissen dating from 1780 and a pair of asparagus tongs made in 1890 by Carl Peter Fabergé, jeweler to the Russian court.

Explore the Old Town at Your Own Pace

The free “Entdecke Schrobenhausen” (“Discover Schrobenhausen”) city app lets you explore the historic old town at your own pace. The available walking tours are “Walk Around the Rampart” and “Crafts and Trade.” Alongside exploring on your own, you can choose between these two named themes for a walking tour. Check that the app is available before using it.

There is also a clearly named starting point for a cycling tour: the cycle tour through the Schrobenhausen asparagus region begins in the heart of Schrobenhausen’s old town. It differs from the walking tours mentioned above in its mode of transport and its connection to the asparagus region.

Asparagus as a Seasonal Highlight

Schrobenhausen is known as the home of Schrobenhausen asparagus and as one of Bavaria’s 100 culinary destinations. Traditionally, asparagus takes center stage there until St. John’s Day on June 24, the last day of the asparagus harvest. The harvest period can vary depending on conditions. So if you want to plan your trip around asparagus season, check the timing in advance. St. John’s Day provides a fixed calendar date for the tradition, while the actual harvest can depend on conditions at the time.

In the wider Neuburg-Schrobenhausen destination

The wider Neuburg-Schrobenhausen destination offers additional cultural and landscape highlights. In Neuburg, Count Palatine Ottheinrich had the Residenzschloss built from 1530 to 1545; it is an important example of early Renaissance architecture. The chapel in the Residenzschloss is one of the oldest Protestant church buildings in the world and features frescoes by Hans Bocksberger dating from 1543. GrĂĽnau Hunting Lodge is another example of early Renaissance architecture.

The landscape of the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen region ranges from rock formations in the north to the Danube floodplain forest, the Donaumoos and the asparagus fields of the Schrobenhausen region in the south. Regional nature highlights also include the wet meadows in the meadow-breeding bird areas of the Donaumoos and the Paar Valley. These are important habitats for the great bustard, lapwing, meadow pipit, corn bunting, whinchat, corncrake and common snipe. These regional examples add further aspects of the wider destination to Schrobenhausen’s old town and asparagus themes.
