Theisseil: Cross-country skiing and churches

Two distinct themes can guide a stay in Theisseil: cross-country ski trails in the municipality and churches in Wilchenreuth and Letzau. There is parking at the Letzau sports centre, with direct access to the trails. The four trails are offered by the Ski-Langlaufgemeinschaft Weiden / Letzau e.V. and feature panoramic views. Snow and trail conditions vary by season; check local conditions before your trip.

Parking and direct access to the trails are useful points of reference at the sports centre. The number of trails and the panoramic views give an idea of what the local offering includes; for specific plans, conditions on the ground remain decisive. This can help you decide whether cross-country skiing will be a focus of your trip or whether you would rather explore the churches in the local districts.

Churches in Wilchenreuth and Letzau

Wilchenreuth has been part of the Simultankirchenradweg since 2015. The Church of St. Ulrich in Wilchenreuth is on Route 6. For a church-focused trip, these are two specific route and location references, distinct from the trails in the municipality.

The Church of St. John of Nepomuk stands in Letzau. Bishop Müller consecrated it in 2005; its features include large, three-part stained-glass windows. This brings together different perspectives on churches in Theisseil: the location of the Church of St. Ulrich on a route, and the consecration history and windows of the church in Letzau.

In the wider destination of Neustadt an der Waldnaab

The district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab is in the Upper Palatinate Forest destination. Activities offered there include hiking, cycling, museum visits and swimming in numerous bathing waters. The examples below are part of this wider destination and should be considered as separate options for excursions and activities.

Explore the Bockl

The Bockl is a 52-kilometre route from Neustadt an der Waldnaab to Eslarn, following a historic railway line. It can be used on foot, by bicycle or on inline skates. Most of the route is paved and traffic-free; gradients rarely exceed three percent. The listed modes of transport and route features can help you choose the type of outing, but do not indicate an individual walking or cycling time.

The Bockl’s starting point in Neustadt an der Waldnaab is directly accessible by train. Trains run every hour to the terminus of the Nuremberg–Neustadt an der Waldnaab line; from there, you can transfer straight to a bicycle. Check the timetable before travelling. This allows you to plan the train journey to the route’s starting point separately, without treating it as a journey to Theisseil.

Parkstein and Speinshart

In Parkstein, the historic tour begins at Landrichterschloss, which houses the Vulkanerlebnis Parkstein Museum. Geopark rangers offer guided tours of the basalt wall, the rock cellars and the basalt cone; check availability in advance. The basalt cone was added to the list of Bavaria’s 100 most beautiful geotopes in 2003 and received the designation “National Geotope” in 2006. At Vulkanerlebnis Parkstein, a volcanic eruption is depicted every hour and can be experienced on three levels. Check current times before your visit.

Speinshart also adds a distinct cultural highlight to the wider destination. The abbey church is one of the most significant Baroque buildings in southern Germany and is distinguished by its Italian High Baroque furnishings. The monastery and the preserved historic monastery village of Speinshart together form a cultural asset of European standing. A public guided tour of the church takes place at 3 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays. As tour times can change, check the monastery’s latest information in advance.

Nature and Zoigl culture

In the Doost nature reserve, the Girnitzbach stream flows through a sea of massive, rounded granite boulders along a stretch of about 750 metres. Several hiking trails lead there from Neustadt/WN, Weiden or Floß. This example combines a specific natural formation with the option of reaching it via various designated access routes.

In Windischeschenbach, 17 Zoigl hosts, including 12 traditional communal brewers, take turns serving the speciality beer in their Zoigl pubs on weekends. If you are planning a visit on a particular weekend, check in advance which pub will be serving: both the number of hosts and the dates can change.
