In winter, two named cross-country ski trails add to the options. They differ not only in their scenery, but also in their specific requirements and route features. You can weigh up whether golf, a longer tour through the Kuppenalb, or a view of the landscape should be the focus of your plans.

Golf in Hilzhofen: two courses, different requirements

Hilzhofen is home to an 18-hole championship course operated by Jura Golf Park. It is set in the Jura landscape, with views of hills and valleys, meadows and trees, as well as forest clearings and bushes. The course operates seasonally. You need to reserve a tee time for a round, so be sure to factor this into your plans.

The Jura Golf Park Academy in Hilzhofen also has a public 9-hole course. You do not need a DGV course qualification or club membership to use it. However, you do need to take three individual lessons with an instructor or complete a beginner’s course. So “public” does not mean that there are no requirements: what matters is which of the two courses you wish to use and what conditions apply. The tee-time reservation applies to the 18-hole championship course; the stated lesson or course requirements apply to the Academy’s public course.

Circular hiking trail and landscape history

A signposted circular hiking trail of about 10 kilometres connects Habsberg, Unterwiesenacker and Hilzhofen through the Kuppenalb landscape. Information boards along the route cover landscape conservation, Juradistl lamb, and pilgrimage routes. The trail thus combines a specific distance with topics related to the landscape and its care. You can use the named places and the circular route as guides when choosing a hike on your map.

Hilzhofen’s former water supply is also a topic along the Kuppenalb hiking trail. The village’s hydraulic “ram” pump has been reinstated as an exhibit, and information along the trail explains its role in the former water supply system. This adds a local connection to the history of technology alongside the information boards. If you explore the route, you will encounter not only landscape conservation and pilgrimage routes, but also the history of the village’s water supply.

The Juradistl Landscape Cinema

The Juradistl Landscape Cinema lies about 400 metres outside Hilzhofen. A short wooden tunnel leads to 25 permanently installed seats made of wood and iron, arranged in a semicircle like a small amphitheatre. From here, you can look out over the distinctive dolomite hills and the grazed calcareous grasslands of Schanzberg. The Landscape Cinema offers a different focus from the circular hiking trail: rather than an approximately 10-kilometre route, the emphasis here is on a purpose-built seating area with a view of the landscape.

Cross-country ski trails for your winter plans

Both named cross-country ski trails start at the car park of the Landgasthof Meier in Hilzhofen. The classic Hilzhofen trail runs across the golf course and is signposted “Nordic Zentrum Neumarkt-Hilzhofen.” The Habsberg trail is 7.6 kilometres long. When planning, note that the distance refers to the Habsberg trail, while the route and signage are specified for the classic Hilzhofen trail. Check current conditions in advance before committing to a trail.
