Dietfurt a.d. Altmühl: Nature, History and Archaeology
Accommodation in Dietfurt an der Altmühl
Dietfurt a.d. Altmühl is a town in the district of Neumarkt i.d.OPf. in Bavaria, nestled in the natural landscapes of Altmühltal Nature Park. Seven valleys, the Main-Danube Canal, the Altmühl and other waterways shape the visitor experience. This offers a range of options for planning your trip: landscapes and water, archaeological traces, the museum, and routes on foot or by bike. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these aspects will be the main focus of your stay.
Landscapes and Waterways
Several landscapes and waterways converge in Dietfurt: the valleys, the Main-Danube Canal, the Altmühl and other bodies of water. The canoe route through Altmühltal Nature Park also offers a wider regional perspective. It is almost 120 kilometres long and runs between Gunzenhausen and Dietfurt/Töging. When planning, you can distinguish between the waterways in the Dietfurt visitor area and the longer course of the canoe route.
The district of Neumarkt i.d.OPf., part of the wider travel destination of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, lies in the northeast of Altmühltal Nature Park and within the Bayerischer Jura landscape region. This regional context complements the view of Dietfurt’s valleys and waterways with the wider landscape setting of the district.
Museum and History
The Museum im Hollerhaus is located in the centre of Dietfurt. The Weiherstraße bus stop is 500 metres from the museum. If you plan to arrive by bus, check the current services in advance. The exhibition brings together two themes: it traces the development of settlements and landscapes over the past 4,000 years, and features collections of rocks, minerals and fossils that explain geological development.
Archaeological excavations show that prehistoric settlements existed in the area around Dietfurt as early as the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages. The first documented mention of Dietfurt dates from 1109; by 1416, the place was already referred to as a town. This allows the area’s early settlement and the later documented history of the town to be viewed as distinct periods.
Archaeological Park and Cycling Routes
The Altmühltal Archaeological Park comprises 18 sites between Kelheim, Essing, Riedenburg and Dietfurt. From Dietfurt, you can explore the park on tours along the Altmühltal Cycle Route towards Kelheim. On the section of cycle route between Dietfurt and Riedenburg, the route to Mühlbach follows the Main-Danube Canal; sites in the Altmühltaler Archaeological Park are also included. All sites are free of charge and freely accessible. Check the current access conditions before your trip.
Circular Route and Freely Accessible Grounds
Another way to combine the waterways and technology is the Dietfurt water trail “Technology and Nature” (W2). This easy, five-kilometre themed educational loop is a family activity. It contrasts the lock on the Main-Danube Canal and the historic lock on the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal with the natural old channels of the Altmühl. The starting point is the Dietfurt landing stage, where parking is available. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.
This brings two different scales together: the five-kilometre W2 loop and the archaeological park, spread across 18 sites and featuring cycling tours towards Kelheim. The grounds of the Alcmona adventure village in Dietfurt are also freely accessible.
Culture and Trip Planning
The Dietfurt Cultural Centre hosts annual cooking evenings featuring Chinese specialities. If you would like to include this culinary programme in your trip plans, check the current dates in advance. This lets you plan your stay around a museum theme, a route or a specific event date, without limiting landscapes and culture to a single activity.
