This will help you first decide whether the Old Town or regional museum and landscape themes should be the focus of your stay.

Culture in the heart of Landau’s Old Town

Kastenhof – The Museum of the Stone Age and the Present is in the heart of Landau’s Old Town, directly opposite the parish church. Today, Kastenhof is a cultural centre. The parish church of St. Mary’s Assumption is Baroque; its origins date back to the town’s founding in 1224. The two places therefore offer different historical points of reference: a cultural centre today and a church with roots in the town’s founding era.

The Kalktuffdamm (calcareous tufa dam) is also a local natural attraction. It has been a protected nature reserve since 1937.

Culture in the wider Dingolfing-Landau destination

In the wider Dingolfing-Landau destination, Kastenhof Landau tells the story of the first farmers through original archaeological finds from the region. Hands-on replicas, striking images and the lifelike figure of Lisar, a Neolithic woman, bring the past to life. Alongside the cultural centre today, the museum also offers tangible insights into early ways of life.

The Maria im Steinfels pilgrimage church was consecrated in 1726. Its altar stands in front of a Nagelfluh rock face. Housed in the Weißgerberhaus, the Landau local history museum displays rural domestic culture, faith and piety, the history of Landau, bourgeois domestic life and self-representation, as well as urban crafts. Its main focus is the 19th century. The two museums therefore have clearly distinct themes: one focuses on early settlement and archaeological finds, while the other explores everyday life, town history and crafts.

Dingolfing also offers a distinctive perspective on history in the wider destination: the Museum Dingolfing occupies three historic buildings in the Upper Town – the Herzogsburg, the Pfleghof and the Getreidekasten. It presents Dingolfing’s town and industrial history from the Neolithic Age to the present day. The Herzogsburg was built around 1410 as the official residence of the Kastner and as accommodation for the Bavarian dukes.

Landscape and activities in the wider destination

The “Vilstal bei Marklkofen” nature reserve covers almost 175 hectares and provides a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. The Vilstalsee, which covers around 100 hectares, lies within the nature reserve and is ideal for walks and cycling tours. It also offers opportunities for boating, sailing and surfing. The wider destination therefore caters to different interests, with routes for walking or cycling as well as activities on the water.
