Discover Schondorf am Ammersee
Accommodation in Schondorf Am Ammersee
Art and church history, exhibitions, a 12 km-long hiking trail and original bathing cabins from the 1930s offer a range of points of interest. The details below can help you plan a stay around the themes that interest you.
Art and history in the town
St. Jakobskirche in Unterschondorf was built around 1149 and has largely retained its original form to this day. Its age and state of preservation make it a tangible historical landmark. It should not be confused with St. Jakobuskapelle, which is named as the starting point of the Way of St. James in the route description.
In its archive house, the Gestalt-Archiv Hans Herrmann e.V. presents changing exhibitions on art education, creative work and 20th-century textile work. It was established in memory of art educator Hans Herrmann (1899–1981). While the church is defined by its long history, the archive focuses on design and textile work.
Since 1987, Studio Rose has provided contemporary artists with exhibition space. At the same time, it commemorates the artistic work of the painter brothers Walter (1903–1964) and Heinz Rose (1902–1971), who lived in Schondorf. The combination of exhibitions and a connection to local art gives this subject its own distinct character.
In 2017, Renate Rose bequeathed studioRose, which was designed as an exhibition space, to the municipality of Schondorf, along with numerous works by her husband, Heinz Rose. The story of this gift is also part of the town’s cultural heritage.
Hiking trail and historic lido
The 12 km-long Way of St. James hiking trail begins in Schondorf at the boat landing, where there is a car park near St. Jakobuskapelle. Following the shell signs, it leads through the forest to the lido in Eching. The route description identifies the starting point, trail markers, forest section and destination; these stages give you a clear impression of the route.
The lido at Café Forster in Schondorf has original bathing cabins from the 1930s. The cabins provide a distinct historical point of interest alongside the church history and artistic themes. If you plan to visit the lido or an exhibition, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Distinctive themes in the wider destination of Landsberg Am Lech

The Mutterturm is a monument to Historicism, built by Herkomer in honour of his mother. The Stadtmuseum Landsberg am Lech connects the interpretation of the town’s history with contemporary issues and offers a view of the town from the Leitenberg.
Lechpark Pössinger Au is the city of Landsberg’s main local recreation area, encompassing forests, meadows and river floodplains with animal and plant species that have become rare. Guided tours of Landsberg’s old town tell, among other things, of dukes and electors, the salt trade, raftsmen, dyers and tanners, Jesuits and Ursulines, as well as legends spanning the Middle Ages to modern times. The LechErlebnisWeg begins at Landsberg’s Hauptplatz and follows the course of the river for most of its route.
