Apfeldorf can be explored through two distinct themes: the architectural history of its churches and the “Along the Lech Loops” cycling tour. The historical information spans Halden Chapel and later alterations to the Church of the Holy Spirit. The rectory at Flößerstraße 6 also offers specific architectural details. Other points of interest include a moderate cycling tour through Apfeldorf and the Lech reservoir near Apfeldorf.

Churches and historical architectural styles

Halden Chapel was rebuilt at a different location in 1816. The old Halden Chapel of 1739/40 served as its model. This links two construction phases: the older chapel on which the new building was based, and its later construction at a different location.

The Catholic parish church of the Holy Spirit is a hall church with a recessed polygonal choir and a west tower. Its core is Late Gothic, while the tower is Late Romanesque. In the mid-18th century, the church was given a Baroque makeover; in 1822, the nave received a vault. Its furnishings are also among the building’s distinctive features. These elements from different periods can thus be distinguished without assigning them all to a single construction phase.

The terms describe different parts of the church: “hall church” refers to the main space, while the recessed polygonal choir is the many-sided end of the choir. The parish church also includes a burial chapel built around 1870. The small tuff building has a gabled roof and is designed in Neo-Romanesque forms.

Another building of note is the rectory at Flößerstraße 6. This two-storey building with a hipped roof and a rounded, raised porch was built to a design by Johann Michael Fischer between 1747 and 1749. Parts of the enclosure have been preserved: a low tuff-stone wall, pillars and a wooden fence. The roof shape, porch and enclosure each provide their own details about the historic complex.

Cycling route and habitat along the Lech

The moderate “Along the Lech Loops” cycling tour is 21.2 kilometres long and passes through Apfeldorf. Its length and stated difficulty provide useful details for planning. Check the current conditions on the route before setting off.

The Lech reservoir near Apfeldorf has areas of sedimentation. These provide habitats for numerous waterbirds and wetland species. The habitats by the water therefore complement the architectural history and cycling tour as further themes of the destination.

Landsberg Am Lech: regional context

In the wider regional context, Landsberg Am Lech offers its own cultural and landscape highlights. The Bayertor in Landsberg am Lech has stood since 1425 and is considered one of Bavaria’s finest Gothic buildings. The city is also home to the Mutterturm, an exceptional monument of Historicism that Herkomer had built in honour of his mother. The two buildings represent distinct historical periods.

The Landsberg am Lech City Museum is located on the Leitenberg and offers one of the finest views of the city. It conveys the city’s history and connects it with questions of the present day. The Lechpark Pössinger Au offers a different perspective: it is Landsberg’s main recreational area and encompasses woodland, meadows and floodplain landscapes with animal and plant species that have become rare.

Lake Ammersee is also part of the regional context: it lies entirely within the district of Landsberg am Lech and offers boat trips, water sports and attractive lakeside promenades. Alongside the city’s historic buildings, activities focused on water and nature are available as distinct themes in their own right.
