Marktrodach offers a range of options for a stay if you are interested in rafting, hiking, and outdoor activities. The Unterrodach Rafting Museum and St. Michael’s Parish Church reflect the history of rafting; in Unterrodach, the Rodachtal Trail KC 11 leads to the church, town hall, and museum, among other places. Radspitze and mountain biking add sporting options to the mix. You can choose what to focus on in Marktrodach according to your interests: culture, a hiking route, or other outdoor activities.

Rafting at the Museum and Church

The Unterrodach Rafting Museum has been housed in a former raft owner’s mansion since 1981 and is the museum of the Marktrodach market municipality. Visits outside regular opening hours are possible by prior arrangement with the municipal administration; please arrange your visit a few days before your planned date. In St. Michael’s Parish Church in Unterrodach, an anchor and a model raft recall rafting on the Rodach, which shaped the town. Marktrodach also has numerous magnificent raft owners’ mansions.

Hiking on Two Routes

The Rodachtal Trail KC 11 is an easy hiking route measuring 13.1 kilometers, with an elevation gain of 112 meters. In Unterrodach, it leads to the church, town hall, and rafting museum, among other places. Its length and elevation gain, together with its easy rating, give you a clear framework for planning your hike. The Frankenweg crosses Unterrodach on its route from Marktrodach-Zeyern to Weismain. The two routes therefore differ in how they relate to the town: the KC 11 specifies its length and destinations in Unterrodach, while the Frankenweg passes through the town on its way to Weismain.

Radspitze and Mountain Biking

Marktrodach is located in the Franconian Forest Nature Park. Conditions are good for mountain bikers, as well as for people who are new to the sport. At 678 meters high, Radspitze offers paragliding and hang-gliding opportunities for active visitors. The Radspitze Tower is freely accessible; it may be closed due to weather during the winter months. If you plan to visit the tower at that time of year, check conditions in advance.

Kronach District as a Regional Setting

The larger northeastern part of Kronach District lies in the Franconian Forest, a densely forested, gently rounded upland range with many valleys at elevations of about 500 to just over 700 meters. The rest of the district lies in the northern part of the Upper Main Hill Country. This area descends southwest from the Franconian Forest to about 300 to 500 meters and features escarpments and terraces. Most of the district lies in the catchment area of the Rodach and its tributaries, which flow southwest toward the Upper Main. The Rennsteig of the Thuringian Forest and the Franconian Forest also runs for an 18-kilometer section through Kronach District.
