Oberoberndorf: Historic Buildings, Church Fair and Landscape
Accommodation in Oberoberndorf
Oberoberndorf offers several starting points for planning a trip: listed buildings, local traditions, the course of the Aspach stream and a hiking trail to Maria Frieden Monastery. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose a location based on whether architectural history, event dates or a route connection is of particular interest to you.
Listed Buildings and Their History
The listed buildings showcase a range of forms and materials. The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes is a hall church with a gabled roof. Its architectural features include a gable turret with exposed sandstone and a recessed chancel with a five-sided apse. The Lorenz Fountain provides another example of the use of stone: its spring chamber, built from sandstone blocks, dates from the early 19th century. At Oberoberndorf 7, a wayside shrine consists of a sandstone pillar with a niche topped by a semi-circular canopy. It dates from around 1900.
Two historic buildings can also be distinguished by their construction and date. The residential byre house at Oberoberndorf 12 is two storeys high and combines a solid, plastered ground floor with a half-timbered upper storey; it dates from the early 19th century. The former brewery at Oberoberndorf 20 is also two storeys high, but is a half-timbered building with a half-hipped roof dating from the 18th century. Its rear extension with a brick chimney was built in the 19th century. Together, these building styles illustrate different details of rural architecture, and the buildings cannot be reduced to a single period.
The Aspach, the Landscape and the Trails
The Aspach rises in Oberoberndorf and flows through the village. From there, it passes Kirchschletten and continues to Zapfendorf, before eventually flowing into the Main. An avenue of apple trees is also a distinctive feature of the landscape: it makes the route from Oberoberndorf towards Hofhölzer easy to trace.
A local hiking trail through Oberoberndorf leads to Maria Frieden Monastery, a pilgrims’ hostel in Kirchschletten. The stated distance is 5 km. Nearby, the widely visible Windischletten Linden stands on the boundary between the districts of Windischletten and Oberoberndorf. The linden is associated with Windischletten and stands on a grassland area belonging to the town of Scheßlitz; it is listed as a cultural and historical monument. These routes and landscape features differ from the buildings in the village and add destinations beyond local architecture to your travel plans.
Church Fair, Apple Market and Local Tradition
Oberoberndorf’s church fair features a game of hitting the rooster and a climbing tree with sweets for children. The church fair in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes is scheduled for Mother’s Day, or the second Sunday in May. The Oberoberndorf-Kirchschletten-Reuthlos Fruit and Horticultural Society lists an apple market on the first Sunday in October. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the programme for the relevant year in advance.
Local tradition includes the tale of the “Gruäßtunnern”. It tells of farmers who lit cigars while passing through Schweißdorf and Kirchschletten, then, after leaving the villages, stubbed them out on wooden telephone poles to save money. As a story passed down through generations, it sits alongside the architectural heritage and recurring event dates.
