Gößweinstein: Pilgrimage, Castle and Outdoor Activities
Accommodation in Gößweinstein
If you’re looking for a hotel in Gößweinstein, you can plan your stay around different interests: pilgrimage and architectural history, the castle or the Balthasar Neumann Circular Hiking Trail, as well as outdoor activities. This lets you decide in advance whether you want to focus mainly on cultural attractions or include swimming, climbing and kayaking.
Pilgrimage and Architectural History
More than 160 pilgrimage groups travel to the Gößweinstein Basilica each year; this figure may change over time. The Pilgrimage Museum is housed in the former sacristan’s residence, dating from the 18th century, in the Holy Precinct, right next to the Baroque church designed by Balthasar Neumann.
The heart of the museum is a collection of more than 100 life-size human figures, mostly made of wax. They originated as votive offerings that were left there over the centuries. Alongside the basilica, the historic sacristan’s residence and the museum’s collection each showcase different aspects of this place of pilgrimage.
Castle and Circular Hiking Trail
Gößweinstein Castle stands above the town of the same name in Franconian Switzerland. In general, you can explore it independently; however, the site is currently closed. Check whether it has reopened before visiting.
The Balthasar Neumann Circular Hiking Trail runs along roads and paths in and around Gößweinstein. It passes the Kreuzberg pilgrimage site, Gernerfels, Gößweinstein Castle, Wagnershöhe and Fischersruh. This offers a different focus from visiting a single destination: the trail connects several named stops and also takes you into the countryside surrounding the town.
Swimming, Climbing and Kayaking
Gößweinstein’s Höhenfreibad is a natural-style swimming area with biological water treatment, as well as a swimming and bathing pond. There are well over 400 equipped climbing routes in the Gößweinstein market area. Leinen Los also offers kayaking tours on the Wiesent; availability may vary.
The early-morning kayak tour offered by Leinen Los starts at Behringersmühle station in Gößweinstein and runs via Sachsenmühle for around 8.2 kilometres to Muggendorf. The route features easy whitewater and is also suitable for beginners. The season runs from May to September; check availability for your dates before travelling.
Visitors can play soccer golf and disc golf at the Leinen Los event grounds in Gößweinstein. You can learn archery there in a taster course. Check the current availability of these activities in advance.
In the wider Forchheim destination area
The Kulturerlebnis Fränkische Schweiz hiking trail connects landmark cultural projects across more than 280 kilometres in the district of Forchheim. Wiesenthau Castle is privately owned, used as a restaurant and available to visit by prior arrangement. Confirm your visit in advance. Neideck Castle ruins and the Neideck Archaeological Park are accessible at all times; follow the local safety and nature conservation notices there.
