Galgweis can be explored through three themes: its late Baroque parish church, the Vils landscape between Gergweis and Galgweis, and a local history whose oldest documented name dates back to the 8th century. These themes offer different perspectives on the town: architecture, river features and historical names. When choosing Galgweis as a travel destination, you can decide whether you are more interested in architectural history, the landscape or the written records of the town.

Parish Church and Historical Evidence

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Galgweis is a late Baroque hall church with a recessed choir and a south tower. It was built by Georg Felix Hirschstötter Jr. between 1757 and 1759. A hall church is a longitudinal church with a largely unified interior. The recessed choir is narrower than the main part of the church. The terms therefore describe both the building type and the church’s layout.

The area around the parish church also contains historical evidence: archaeological remains from the Middle Ages and the early modern period lie beneath the ground in the vicinity of the churchyard and the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul. Historical tombs are also located in the northern part of the cemetery. The war memorial in Galgweis is a place of remembrance and quiet reflection. Thus, architectural history, archaeological evidence and places of remembrance sit side by side in Galgweis.

Vils Landscape and Finding Your Way

Between Gergweis and Galgweis, there are numerous wooded side channels and oxbow channels of the Vils. Side channels are secondary courses of a river; oxbow channels are former river courses that have become separated from the main channel. The two terms therefore refer to different types of waterway in this stretch. Historically, Galgweis was regarded as a parish village on the left bank of the Vils.

For cyclists, navigation needs to be planned for everyday routes: the routes are not signposted, so you must use a map or follow the track to navigate. As signposting can change, it is worth checking the current route guidance before setting out. This makes finding your way a separate planning consideration alongside Galgweis’ landscape and historical themes.

Place Name and History

The oldest documented name of Galgweis is Harioldeswis. It is already attested in a Latin document from the 8th century. The historical forms Garioldswis and Galkwis developed from Harioldeswis. This sequence makes the evolution of the place name over time tangible and provides a specific linguistic point of reference for local history.

Other historical connections link Galgweis with neighbouring places: in the 15th century, the Amsham family took Galgweis as a fief from Passau. Franz Adam von Amsham bequeathed Galgweis and Oberndorf to Ranshofen Abbey. The former Oberndorf estate, with its castle and castle chapel, is a quarter of an hour northwest of Galgweis. These details offer different ways into the history: the evolution of the place name, historical feudal relations and the connection with Oberndorf.

Within the wider travel destination of Osterhofen, the Danube Cycle Path, a long-distance cycling route, passes through the urban area. Osterhofen City Park lies in the southwest of the city, a few minutes’ walk from the city centre, and has occupied a 4.5-hectare site since 1996. The Osterhofen exercise trail there offers training opportunities for the legs, shoulders and back, as well as equipment for back massage, arm pulls and push-ups. The Mühlham Danube Loop is a natural monument in Osterhofen. These places and facilities belong to the wider travel destination of Osterhofen and should be distinguished from the features of Galgweis described above.
