Birgland combines nature trails with special scenic viewpoints and cultural attractions. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different highlights: the Orchid Trail connects Lichtenegg and Wurmrausch, while the forest discovery trail combines nature-related themes with hands-on stations. A cycling route and annual Kirwan festivals are also among the attractions you can take into account when choosing when to travel.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The Orchid Trail is known for its abundance of rare native plants. These include lady’s slipper orchids, white helleborines, cuckoo flowers, fly orchids and bird’s-nest orchids. Flowering is seasonal; if you are visiting specifically to see the orchids, it is best to time your visit to coincide with their flowering season. The trail connects Lichtenegg and Wurmrausch and is easy for families to walk.

The Birgland Forest Discovery Trail in Schwenderöd follows a section of the Birgland circular hiking trail. It has 15 stations with two different focuses: at eight stations, you can try physical activities such as balancing, lifting weights or climbing. The remaining seven feature panels on forest-related topics; they also offer the game “I Spy with My Little Eye”.

The two trails therefore have different characters: the Orchid Trail focuses on rare plants and connects two places. The Forest Discovery Trail spreads activities and forest-related topics across individual stations. When planning, you can decide whether you are more interested in the variety of plants along a trail or a mix of activities and information panels.

The Bärenfelsen and the Lichtenegg castle ruins are located along the Birgland circular hiking trail; both offer expansive views. Another natural monument on the Orchid Trail is the Türkenfelsen. Its rock towers at the large eastern gate are climbing crags graded 4 and 5. The viewpoints and rock formations complement the plant and forest themes with striking landmarks along the hiking routes.

Cycling route and cultural events

Cycling Route 1 AS runs from Weigendorf via Fürnried to Frankenhof and back. Annual Kirwan festivals are also held in the municipality’s districts. The exact dates may vary; if you would like to include a Kirwa in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.
