Geigant: Circular Trails, Views and Village History
Accommodation in Geigant
In Geigant, you can make hiking, views and village history the focus of your trip planning. The circular hiking trail Wm 14 has a stated distance and duration; another marked loop passes several named stops. The parish church of St. Bartholomew defines the village’s architectural centre. These give you various points of reference to include the route and the village’s character in your plans.
Circular Trails and Viewpoints
The moderately difficult circular hiking trail Wm 14, the Geiganter Zwirenzelweg, starts and ends at the bus stop/school in Geigant. Over 5.32 kilometres, it passes the cemetery, the Zwirenzel viewpoint rock and the Zillendorfer Blick. The stated duration is 2:00 hours. With its distance, difficulty rating and time, this loop can be planned precisely; the three named stops also help you follow the route.
Another marked circular route leads from Geigant via Zwirenzel and Machtesberg to Kathlfelsen and on to Arberblick. The return route to Geigant runs via Roßfhof. You can get a sense of this tour from its sequence of stops. Check trail conditions for the season before planning the loop. When comparing the routes, Wm 14 has a specific distance and duration; the other loop is characterised by its route through the named places.
From the summit cross on the Geiganter Zwirenzlweg, you can see Geigant, Bleschenberg and Schwarzwihrberg. A stone eagle and an “iron” badger stand on the summit loop. The views and distinctive features along the trail give you further points of reference when choosing a route. A car park for the Geiganter Zwirenzlweg is marked in front of the church in Geigant. Local parking regulations may change, so check them before travelling.
Village Character and History
The parish church of St. Bartholomew marks the architectural centre of Geigant and shapes the village’s character. In front of the new church stands a partially preserved epitaph of the Kagerer family’s successor line. Archaeological finds from the Middle Ages and Early Modern period in the area of the former castle and former church of St. Bartholomew are listed as a monument. The church, epitaph and archaeological finds each give the village a different historical dimension.
Bleschenberg and Surroundings
In the area around Geigant, Bleschenberg is home to the Salve Regina Chapel and the uncovered medieval mine known as “Schrazelloch”. Coming from Waldmünchen, the Bleschenberg observation tower can be reached via State Road 2146 in the direction of Cham: shortly before Geigant, turn right and follow the signs to Sinzendorf. Visiting conditions at the chapel and mine may change; check the current conditions before visiting.
