Accommodation in Eschlkam
For a stay in Eschlkam, cultural history, art and walking routes can be considered as separate areas of interest. Options range from a permanent exhibition and an art trail to cycling loops and a path with places to sit and viewpoints. When planning, you can first decide whether you would rather focus on a topic, a route or a way of getting around.
Cultural history and art in Eschlkam
The permanent exhibition of the Waldschmidt Association in Eschlkam documents Maximilian Schmidt’s life and career. Personal belongings, documents, books, display panels and models form the basis of the exhibition. Biographical records and different forms of presentation come together here. Its focus on one person’s life sets the exhibition apart from the artworks and trails devoted to their own themes.
The Schwirzer monument offers a different historical perspective. The granite figure commemorates the Schwirzer, also known as Pascher. They smuggled goods across the border at night, including tobacco, salt and oxen. The name Pascher and the goods mentioned give the monument a clearly defined connection to the history of smuggling.
The art trail on the Leminger Höhe near Eschlkam features six permanent artworks on the theme “Border Encounters – Paths between East and West.” This theme shapes the trail as a whole. The art pavilion in Stachesried is furnished with large-format paintings. The two places therefore have different artistic focuses: a trail with an explicitly named theme and a pavilion distinguished by its paintings.
The Drachensee and cycling loops
About three quarters of the Drachensee reservoir area lies within the town of Furth im Wald, and about one quarter within the municipality of the market town of Eschlkam. Around the Drachensee, there is a circular route for pedestrians about 10 kilometres long and a circular route for cyclists about 11 kilometres long. In addition to the lakeshore, both routes also take in distinctive features of the surrounding landscape. Their lengths are similar, so the intended use and approximate distance provide concrete points of comparison when choosing between them.
Another cycling option is the 25-kilometre cycle loop through the market town of Eschlkam, with 480 metres of elevation gain. It is therefore considerably longer than the approximately 11-kilometre cycling loop around the Drachensee. Check local route information before setting out. This lets you compare routes by distance and elevation gain without combining the different routes into one tour.
The Warzenrieder Bankerlweg runs through the former municipality and offers places to sit and beautiful views. These two specific features add another option to the selection of routes described here. When choosing a route for your plans, you can consider it separately from the circular routes around the Drachensee and the cycling loop through the market town.
