Bischberg lies at the confluence of the Main and Regnitz. The river landscape, fishing history and distinctive buildings give the town several recognizable themes. For planning your trip, you can choose between a hike with far-reaching views, a sculpture cycling tour and insights into the town’s history. So, alongside the landscape, the development and local characteristics of Bischberg also take center stage.

Landscape, hiking and cycling

Vogelberg is the highest point in the municipality of Bischberg. A hike there offers far-reaching views of the HaĂźberge hills, the Jura, the Main and Regnitz valleys, and the city of Bamberg. Unlike the cycling route, the focus here is on the view from the highest point.

The sculpture cycling tour follows the MainRadweg from Bad Staffelstein to Bischberg. Connecting cycle paths lead, among other places, to Bamberg, Rattelsdorf, Baunach and Franconian Tuscany; there are no major climbs. These cycling connections offer a different perspective from the hike: rather than a single destination with a far-reaching view, the focus is on a route and several named places.

Fishing and local history

The Franconian Fisheries Museum at Bischberger Hauptstraße 130 is a small local history museum focused on fishing, established by volunteers. It displays carved miniatures relating to Bischberg’s local history and has an information room for short films and lectures. The district’s only fishing harbor is also located in Bischberg. The museum and harbor make the town’s connection to fishing part of its local identity in different ways.

Castle and parish church

The present building of the Lower Castle was erected in 1743 by Carl Maximilian Zollner von Brand on the occasion of his marriage. In 1821, the castle passed into private ownership. Today, various events organized by Bischberg associations are regularly held there. The building’s history and the recurring association events represent two different aspects of the castle. If an event is important to your travel plans, check the arrangements for the relevant year in advance.

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Mark is a protected historic church building. The present building was completed in 1979 and is the fourth church on this site. Parts of the earlier churches were incorporated into the new building. Its architectural history thus combines a 20th-century new building with elements retained from earlier churches.

A regular event in September

The Fischerstechen (fishing joust) continues to be held in Bischberg on the parish fair Sunday, the first Sunday in September. If this date is a deciding factor in your travel plans, check the arrangements for the relevant year in advance.

The wider Bamberg destination

The wider Bamberg destination offers further cultural and historical themes that add to the picture of the region. Schloss Weissenstein houses an extensive gallery of art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. In the 18th century, the Ebrach monastery complex was extensively remodeled by Leonhard Dientzenhofer into a palace-like Baroque complex; its Gothic church and rose window were preserved. The Ebrach History Museum has been housed in the former Cistercian monastery since 2004 and explores the history of the market town and the monastery.
