Amberg combines a diverse cultural program with urban history and the landscape along the Vils.

Theater, urban history and architecture

The Amberg City Theater offers more than 100 events each year for a wide-ranging audience. The specific program and its dates change. The Amberg World Theater follows a different rhythm: it takes place every five years and brings together around 100 amateur and professional performers with the rock band Vanden Plas. If you would like to plan your trip around a performance, check the program for your intended travel dates.

On a guided tour with members of the Amberg City Guard, you can explore Wingershofer Gate and the armory inside it. The City Guard leads visitors through the gate in historical costumes; the tour also covers one of the four remaining city gates and the era of the Thirty Years’ War. Group tours can be booked year-round on request, subject to availability.

The Glass Cathedral is a distinctive attraction. Built between 1968 and 1970, the building is now called Kristall-Glasfabrik Amberg GmbH. It is Walter Gropius’ only building in the Upper Palatinate and his last work. In the exhibition room, a narrated multimedia show traces the building’s history from its beginnings in the 1960s to the present day. Check current visitor access before planning your visit.

The City Museum & City Gallery presents a wide range of facets of Amberg across around 1,800 square meters. The Air Museum Amberg explores a different subject: across three floors, it features rooms and exhibits devoted to air. Check the Air Museum’s current opening hours before your visit.

The Vils, the Old Town and viewpoints

Along the Vils, on the edge of Amberg’s Old Town, there is a recreational area with diverse flora and fauna. The Plätte boat runs between the Ship Bridge in the Old Town and Drahthammerwiese in the former State Garden Show grounds. If you plan to take the boat, check the schedule in advance.

Two viewpoints offer different perspectives: From the church on Mariahilfberg, the panoramic view stretches across Amberg, especially at sunset. From the city moat, you can enjoy a view of Nabburger Gate. Together with the Vils area, these spots give you a choice between riverside scenery and views of the city.

Beer heritage, the market and travel dates

Actors accompany the experience tour through the historic brewhouse of the Winkler family brewery, reenacting scenes from 400 years of brewing history. The offer includes a small beer tasting and a beer-carrier’s meal with a starter and main course, served either at Winkler BräuWirt or Schießl Wirtshaus. Check the current schedule in advance.

A farmers’ and weekly market is held in the market square every week, with a focus on regional products. Check current operating details locally. Around July 2, the Amberg Bergfest is celebrated on Mariahilfberg; check the program for the year you plan to travel. Recurring events such as the weekly market therefore differ from events with their own festival or performance program.

If you would like to plan your stay around an event, compare the annual theater season schedule, the World Theater’s five-year cycle and the approximate timing of the Bergfest. For tours available on request and offers with changing dates, check what is currently available during your travel period in advance.
