Wellheim: History and Landscapes in the Urdonautal
Accommodation in Wellheim
Wellheim lies in the middle of the Urdonautal valley. The destination combines local history and ecclesiastical art with rock formations and springs in the surrounding area. The museum and St. Andreas Parish Church offer insights into the history of the market town; marked trails provide further views of the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel in Wellheim, these highlights can help you decide whether culture, historic architecture or landscapes matter most for your stay.
The Urdonautal Museum and the History of the Castles
The Urdonautal Museum Wellheim displays exhibits in 13 glass cases on natural and landscape history, geological history, prehistory and early history, the history of the market town and its districts, and industrial history. The topics thus range from the development of the landscape to the history of the market town. The museum opened in 1990 in the former gatehouse of the market town of Wellheim. A model of Wellheim Castle shows its state of construction in the 14th century. The historical context also includes a total of five castle sites documented within the municipality of Wellheim.
The exhibition presents different perspectives on Wellheim: the castle model shows a particular state of construction, while the glass cases cover other subjects, from natural history to industrial history. The number of castle sites refers to the entire municipality. This helps distinguish the specific exhibit from the broader municipal context.
St. Andreas: Building History and Remembrance
The Catholic parish church of St. Andreas stands on the western edge of Wellheim, at Burgstraße 3. Its origins date back to the 11th or 12th century. Baroque stuccowork and ceiling paintings from around 1700 have been preserved. The church thus brings together a long building history and later decorative features, without conflating the different dates into a single period of construction.
A memorial plaque commemorates Count Konrad von Helfenstein and his wife. Konrad von Helfenstein held the lordship of Wellheim from 1458 to 1473. Together with the church’s location on the western edge of town, its address, artworks and memorial plaque provide concrete points of reference for anyone interested in Wellheim’s history and ecclesiastical art.
Rock Formations and Springs in the Surrounding Area
The Galgenberg lies about one kilometre northeast of Wellheim. This elongated, forested hilltop is approximately 50 metres high, with a karst spring at its foot. The Zigeunerloch offers a different kind of landscape: a striking, unusual rock formation in a dense beech forest, shaped by fissures and grottoes. It lies along a marked walking trail from Wellheim.
The Schutter spring also reveals geological features. Several individual springs can be seen at the spring pool. Behind it, exposed Jurassic limestone was cut into during renaturation work in 2008. Together with the karst spring on the Galgenberg, these features show different forms of water emergence and exposed rock in the surrounding area of Wellheim.
Trails Through the Municipality
The Urdonautalsteig quality trail passes through the municipality of Wellheim. The Felsensteig trail has more specific details on its length, markings and difficulty: the route is four kilometres long, marked in red and rated difficulty level I. It includes short, easy climbing sections; sturdy footwear and sure-footedness are essential. Conditions on the Urdonautalsteig may change. Therefore, check the current route conditions before setting out.
The Felsensteig runs via the Hintere Konsteiner Wand, Dohlenfelsen, Lucky Luke, Merltürme, Weiße Wand, Fensterlwand, Oberlandwand, Aichaer Wand, Oberländer climbing area and Lochwand. For this route, both its length and distinctive course, as well as the sure-footedness required, are important points of reference. The two trails offer different details for planning: specific route information is the focus for the Felsensteig, while the Urdonautalsteig is classified as a quality trail through the municipality.
