Kinding brings together a very well-preserved late-medieval fortified church, a late-Baroque stone bridge and several routes for walking or cycling. This means architectural heritage and outdoor activities go hand in hand. When planning, it is worth keeping in mind the different starting points and the character of each route.

Church of the Nativity of Mary and Stone Bridge

In the northern part of Kinding, the Church of the Nativity of Mary sits against the hillside within a fortified enclosure. This very well-preserved late-medieval defensive complex is the largest fortified church in the Diocese of Eichstätt. The cemetery and parish church of the Nativity of Mary are freely accessible during the day. A visit offers a chance to take in both the hillside setting and the complex’s distinctive defensive character.

Kinding’s Stone Bridge has five arches, is late Baroque and made of regional Jurassic limestone; it was built in 1784. From the bridge, hikers can join the long-distance Altmühltal Panorama Trail, a certified quality hiking trail, and the Castle Trail. The Kinding Castle Trail starts at a parking lot opposite the bridge. The bridge is therefore not just a local landmark, but also a practical point of reference for planning a hike.

Walks and Hiking Trails

The local trails start at different places: the Sommerleite walking trail starts at the village fountain on Kinding’s market square, while the Anlautertal loop starts at the tourist information office. The Altmühltal Panorama Trail passes right through Kinding. When planning your day, you can choose between a walk starting at the market square, the cycling loop starting at the tourist information office, and a route that passes through the town.

Parts of the Kinding Castle Trail follow natural, narrow footpaths and include uphill sections; it is easy to walk with good footwear. At the edge of the forest, Ottilien Chapel on the Castle Trail offers panoramic views of Kinding. The trail also passes the Klause, a rock cave once inhabited by a hermit, and burial mounds from the Hallstatt period in the area around Kinding. The viewpoint, cave and prehistoric burial mounds offer different points of interest along the trail, rather than forming a single sightseeing location.

Nature and Getting Here

Protected biotopes lie around the Stone Bridge. Visitors can watch birds and discover unusual plants there. Together with the panoramic view from Ottilien Chapel, they offer different perspectives on the surrounding area: nature observation at the bridge, and views of Kinding from the edge of the forest. These two experiences add a natural and scenic dimension to the architectural sights.

Kinding (Altmühltal) regional railway station is located directly on the high-speed rail line between Nuremberg and Munich. From May to September, the Freizeitbus stops at Kinding station and takes day-trippers—and, where applicable, their bicycles—to various places and sights in the Altmühltal Nature Park. As the bus operates during this period, check the timetable before your trip for your planned travel date. This lets you coordinate your arrival and potential excursions with the starting points mentioned for the hiking and cycling trails.
