Bad Gögging: Thermal Waters, Roman History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Bad Gögging
Bad Gögging combines thermal waters and Roman bathing culture with routes for walks, hikes and cycling tours. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you would rather focus on thermal baths and museums or on outdoor activities in the countryside.
Thermal Waters and Roman Bathing Culture
Bad Gögging has three local natural remedies officially recognized by the state: sulfur water, natural moor mud and thermal water. The outdoor area of the Limes Thermal Baths has four pools filled with therapeutic thermal mineral water. The water comes from a depth of 498 meters and has temperatures of 28 to 36 °C. These details about its origin and temperature give the thermal water a specific connection to the town.
The Roman sauna at the Limes Thermal Baths also draws on Roman architecture: it is located in a replica Limes tower with a Roman bathhouse. The Roman Museum of Spa and Bathing Culture offers a historical perspective on bathing. It displays excavated remains of various rooms from a Roman bathing complex, including the main bathing room with a large bathing pool and four individual tubs.
The museum is housed in the nave of St. Andrew’s Church in Bad Gögging’s traditional town center. The nave stands directly above the central pool of a former Roman bath. In Bad Gögging, today’s thermal bath culture thus meets an archaeological site whose former use is brought to life in the museum.
Walks, Hikes and Cycling Routes
For a quieter time surrounded by greenery, Bad Gögging’s spa park is ideal for walks and relaxation. Several streams, well-maintained paths and small bridges wind through the park, and two small lakes invite you to linger. The park paths and the themed walking and hiking trails offer different experiences: in and around Bad Gögging, routes pass through gently rolling floodplains, moor deposits and sulfur springs, as well as fields of asparagus and hops.
The Limes hiking trail also ends in Bad Gögging. The routes described can help you decide between a hike and a cycling tour: the Limes hiking trail ends here, while two cycling routes follow different courses. The Danube Cycle Path passes through Bad Gögging. The Abens Cycle Path begins in town and runs along the Abens through the heart of the Hallertau. Each route has its own connection to the town and surrounding landscape.
If you prefer to explore on foot, the park and hiking trails offer varied scenery: streams and small lakes in the spa park, and floodplains, springs and fields along the themed trails. Cyclists can choose between the Danube Cycle Path, which passes through Bad Gögging, and the Abens Cycle Path, which begins here.
Historical Sights in the Wider Destination of Neustadt a.d.Donau
The wider destination of Neustadt a.d.Donau has its own historical sights. St. Anne’s Chapel was built in 1815 as an extension to the town hall; its decoration and furnishings date uniformly from the time it was built. In Neustadt’s town center, St. Lawrence Parish Church and the historic town hall directly opposite form the heart of the town. The late Gothic town hall dates from the late 15th century, has two stories and a steeply pitched gable roof, and underwent major renovations in 1977.
With just two gaps, the town wall encircles Neustadt’s center and has been lined with chestnut trees for more than 100 years. The circular route “Old Rights, Old Paths, Old Walls – Historical Trail of the Wittelsbach Town of Neustadt on the Danube” runs along the wall. Nine audio drama stations tell the town’s history. These Neustadt sights and the circular trail offer a distinct historical perspective on the wider destination.
