Wangen im Allgäu offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: the historic old town, museums, the weekly market and guided experiences each offer a different focus. If you are interested in architectural history and regional everyday culture, you can plan your visit around specific themes—from a walk between the city gates to insights into farming and cheese-making traditions.

Old Town and Architectural History

The historic old town is characterized by restored half-timbered houses, colorful facades, medieval city gates, winding lanes, inviting squares and numerous fountains. It is a lovely place to stroll and linger. The Frauentor, also known as Ravensburger Tor, was first mentioned in official records in 1472 and, like the St. Martin’s Gate, took its present form in 1608; since then, it has borne the mark of the Renaissance. St. Martin’s Gate, now also known as Lindauer Tor, was first mentioned in 1347 and likewise took its present form in 1608. It has partly retained its original Gothic character.

Rochus Chapel in Wangen’s Alter Gottesacker city park was built in 1592/93. Its slightly barrel-vaulted wooden ceiling bears 66 painted panels dating from 1598. The chapel’s construction period and the date of the panels mark two different points in its history.

Museums and Regional History

Wangen’s museum landscape comprises six museums. It ranges from the town museum in the Eselmühle to the walkable defensive walkway along the old town wall, as well as the Powder Tower and the medieval bathhouse; one admission ticket covers them all. The Eselmühle, or town mill, dates from the 16th century. Milling ceased there in 1937, and since 1978 the town has displayed treasures from its past there.

Regional dairy farming is another focus: the Cheese Museum shows how it has shaped the region. In Leupolz, a district of Wangen, the Museum of Rural Culture is housed in a village barn. Spread across four floors and 1,000 square meters, it offers insights into rural life in the past. Exhibits include numerous tools and mementos from crafts and household life, as well as a schoolroom. Groups must register in advance.

Weekly Market and Guided Experiences

Wangen’s weekly market takes place at a regular time each week: every Wednesday morning, more than 70 stalls fill the streets and squares of the old town. Products on offer include fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish, meat, cheese, spices and other goods from the Allgäu, Lake Constance and Upper Swabia. The market brings together a variety of goods from different places of origin.

The Culinary Experience Tour combines regional and seasonal cuisine with a guided tour of the historic old town. Both versions on offer include a three-course meal. The guided walk through the Städtle, by contrast, focuses on the old town scenery and its stories: the tour passes colorful lanes, small gardens, figurative fountains, historic buildings and city gates, sharing stories about culture, tradition and life in the town. Tour dates, as well as dates and booking conditions for the Culinary Experience Tour, may vary; check the relevant details before making plans.

Panoramic Views and Routes

In the observation tower on the state horticultural show grounds, 113 steps sponsored by Wangen residents lead to a platform with views of the Allgäu, Vorarlberg and Swiss mountains. The tower pairs a climb with a clearly stated number of steps with a sweeping panorama.

Wangen im Allgäu lies on the Allgäu Cheese Route. Its signposted culinary and tourist attractions can be explored by car, bicycle or on foot. The network of hiking trails around Wangen is well marked and signposted. Alongside the city’s cultural and historical attractions, routes and hiking trails are another option to consider when planning your trip.
